Newcastle Moves On from Ramsdale as Goalkeeper Hunt Begins

Newcastle United have drawn a firm line under Aaron Ramsdale’s brief Tyneside chapter and moved on. Eddie Howe has decided against making the Southampton loanee a permanent signing, and a new No1 now sits near the top of his summer agenda.

Ramsdale played 23 times during his season-long loan, but those performances have not been enough to convince Howe he should be part of the wider rebuild. Newcastle want a goalkeeper to anchor the next phase, not simply plug a gap.

So the shortlist is already taking shape. Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen, Manchester City’s James Trafford and Stade de Reims’ Ewen Jaouen are all under consideration, three very different profiles with one shared brief: become the long-term solution between the posts.

Silva and Glasner say goodbye in their own words

While Newcastle look forward, two Premier League fanbases have been looking back with emotion.

Marco Silva’s departure from Fulham comes with a legacy that will live far beyond a carefully crafted farewell letter. In his message to supporters, he thanked the fans for standing with him from “day one” and spoke of “five years” in which they “achieved a lot together”. That is no exaggeration.

Silva delivered Fulham’s first league title in 21 years, then did what so many of his predecessors could not: keep the club in the Premier League and make them feel like they belonged there. A top-half finish in 2022-23, their first win over Chelsea in 17 years, and then three straight mid-table seasons turned a yo-yo club into something far more stable. No wonder he insists Fulham will “always be in my heart” and hints he will be back at Craven Cottage one day.

Across London, Oliver Glasner has left Crystal Palace with a European trophy under his arm and a fanbase still ringing in his ears. In his own open letter, he highlighted the “emotion, the intensity, the noise” at Selhurst Park as the fuel behind Palace’s rise, culminating in that Conference League triumph in Leipzig.

Glasner’s words were not just nostalgia. He underlined the mindset shift he helped create: Palace now believe they can “fight against the very best teams at home and across the continent”. The Leipzig final, he wrote, showed a side that “refuses to give in and backs each other every step of the way”. Next season they go into the Europa League without him, but with a manager’s parting belief that they are ready for more.

Cucurella’s future sparks a tug of war

Chelsea’s summer, as ever, will be noisy. Marc Cucurella sits right in the middle of it.

The Spaniard is understood to be open to leaving Stamford Bridge, and Atletico Madrid have emerged as serious suitors. Their problem is price. Atleti want to come in below £43m, while Chelsea’s starting valuation is around £61m – a figure that would even deliver a small profit on the £56m they handed Brighton in 2022.

With three years left on his contract, Chelsea feel in no rush to bow to lowball offers. Negotiations are expected in the coming weeks, but the gap is obvious. As if that wasn’t enough, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City have all been mentioned as admirers. Cucurella, a favourite of Enzo Maresca and once on the brink of joining City before Chelsea swooped, could yet see his career come full circle.

Hackney on Premier League radar

Hayden Hackney looks set to be the next Championship midfielder prised away by the top flight.

Middlesbrough are “braced” for bids, according to reports, with Crystal Palace and Tottenham leading the interest. Everton are also said to be heavily involved in the chase, while Manchester United and RB Leipzig have made enquiries without pushing anything forward yet.

Inside the Riverside, the mood is realistic. After missing out on promotion, Boro know this might be the summer their academy product moves on.

Konaté to Madrid on the horizon?

In Spain, Real Madrid are already plotting their next defensive pillar. Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté is edging closer to an agreement with the European champions, according to the Telegraph.

Madrid’s interest dates back to last summer, and the Bernabéu is reported to be Konaté’s preferred destination. A deal is viewed as likely if Florentino Pérez secures re-election as president. The Frenchman could become the first signing of a second José Mourinho era in Madrid, a statement move to reshape the back line.

Eckert survives Southampton storm

At Southampton, the story is not about who arrives, but who stays.

Tonda Eckert, engulfed in the controversy of “spygate” and the club’s historic expulsion from the play-offs, has kept his job. In an eight-minute video, the 33-year-old head coach appealed directly to Saints fans for “forgiveness” after actions that cost the club a shot at a £215m Premier League jackpot.

Serbian owner Dragan Šolak has decided to stand by his man. It is a bold call. It is also a clear one: Eckert will be backed, not binned, after the most turbulent spell of his young managerial career.

Bayern, Spurs and the midfield merry-go-round

Bayern Munich’s wide rebuild has already taken a twist. After losing out on long-term target Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, the German champions have turned their attention to PSV’s Ismael Saibari.

Talks between Bayern and PSV are already under way, with Saibari – last season’s Eredivisie Player of the Year after 23 goal contributions in 28 league games – keen and personal terms not seen as an obstacle. Vincent Kompany has given the move his approval; now the clubs must thrash out a fee.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are back circling a familiar name. They allowed their option to sign Joao Palhinha permanently from Bayern to expire on June 1, a clause that would have cost just under £26m. Even so, Spurs remain keen and are weighing up a fresh move for the 30-year-old, who impressed on loan.

Big clause, big expectations at Bournemouth

Down on the south coast, Bournemouth are moving aggressively to protect one of the Premier League’s brightest young forwards.

Brazilian winger Rayan is set to have a staggering £130m release clause inserted into his contract from January next year, according to reports. That clause will only kick in if he is still at the club by then, a clear message to potential suitors.

The 19-year-old, signed from Vasco da Gama for around £24.7m in January, produced seven goal contributions in 15 league games and will step onto the European stage next season as Bournemouth head into the Europa League under new boss Marco Rose.

Kolo Muani back to Juve?

Juventus are exploring a return for Randal Kolo Muani after his loan spell in Turin last season, according to Sky Sports.

The former Spurs winger endured a poor season in north London and missed out on the World Cup, but found more rhythm during the second half of the 2024-25 campaign with Juve. Now back at Paris Saint-Germain, he is not thought to be part of the French champions’ plans, opening the door to a permanent switch back to Serie A.

Chelsea’s striker puzzle

Chelsea’s forward line is heading for a reshuffle. The club are prepared to reintegrate Nicolas Jackson into Xabi Alonso’s squad after his loan at Bayern Munich, but a centre-forward sale is expected.

One thing is clear: Joao Pedro is not for sale. That leaves Jackson and Liam Delap as the most likely candidates if Chelsea decide to cash in on one attacker. Young Spanish striker Marc Guiu is expected to go out on loan to gain experience, though a permanent exit has not been completely ruled out.

Liverpool close in on Iraola

On Merseyside, Liverpool’s search for their next head coach is effectively over.

Fabrizio Romano reports that the club have an agreement in principle with Andoni Iraola, and has already delivered his trademark “Here we go” on the deal. Talks accelerated over the past 48 hours, and Slot’s successor at Anfield now looks all but confirmed, pending final details.

Spurs eye Van Hecke as Romero’s future hangs

Tottenham’s defensive plans could change fast. If captain Cristian Romero leaves this summer – and there is a feeling he could, with serious chances of an exit reported – Spurs have lined up Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke as a key target, according to The Athletic.

The Dutchman, who thrived under Roberto De Zerbi, fits the profile Ange Postecoglou wants: aggressive, comfortable on the ball, and proven in the Premier League. Romero’s decision may dictate how hard Spurs push.

Bellamy chooses Wales over club chaos

Craig Bellamy has had options. He has turned them all down for Wales.

Linked with Burnley, where he worked as Vincent Kompany’s assistant, and even mentioned around the Celtic job, Bellamy instead committed fully to the national team. He spoke of being “completely backed” in the role and of the chance to improve over the next two years.

He admitted his ambition and desire to “earn loads and loads of money”, but insisted the timing is wrong for a club move. Wales, he said, gave him an opportunity others might not have, given his lack of managerial experience. For now, that loyalty goes both ways.

Tottenham’s defensive shopping list grows

Spurs are not only looking at Van Hecke. Reports in Spain suggest they are also battling Lazio for centre-back Sergi Dominguez.

Sold by Barcelona last summer, Dominguez now has just 12 months left on his Lazio deal. The Italian club have already made an opening bid of under £3m, while Spurs may need to go significantly higher to tempt both club and player. At 21, he fits the profile of a project signing, but one with clear upside.

Palace turn to Pierre Sage

With Glasner gone and Iraola bound for Liverpool, Crystal Palace have moved quickly to secure their next man in the dugout.

The club have been in talks with Lens boss Pierre Sage, who is now viewed as their top target. A two-year deal is on the table, and while compensation will be required to prise him from France, Palace are said to be willing to pay it.

No agreement has been finalised yet, but the direction is clear. Palace, fresh from a European trophy and heading into the Europa League, want a coach who can build on Glasner’s mindset and keep the club swinging at the heavyweights.
