Motherwell Appeals Scottish FA Fine Over Controversial Penalty Decision

Motherwell have lodged an appeal against a £5,000 Scottish FA fine after the club publicly condemned the stoppage-time penalty that helped Celtic to a dramatic win at Fir Park in May.

The incident, from the penultimate round of Premiership fixtures, has refused to die down. Deep into added time, with the game level, Celtic were awarded a penalty when Sam Nicholson was punished for handball. Kelechi Iheanacho stepped up and buried the spot-kick for a 3-2 victory, a decision that sent tempers flaring well beyond the final whistle.

Motherwell’s response was pointed and unapologetic. The club released a video on social media accompanied by the caption: “As the world of football mocks our game, we simply have to draw a line in the sand and shift the focus.” It was a direct shot at the state of officiating and, more specifically, the use of VAR in Scotland.

The Scottish FA did not let it slide. On 16 July, a disciplinary tribunal issued the £5,000 fine to Motherwell and came down hard on individuals who had gone even further in their criticism.

Elliot Watt, who has since left the club, received a four-game suspension after branding the decision “the worst VAR decision in history” on X. His words captured the fury inside the Motherwell camp but also crossed a line in the eyes of the governing body.

He was not alone in facing punishment. Derek McInnes, now Rangers manager but in charge of Hearts at the time, was hit with a four-game touchline ban for his own comments on the same penalty during a television interview. When managers and players from different clubs line up on the same side of an argument, it underlines just how contentious a single call has become.

Motherwell’s appeal now drags the saga into a new phase. This is no longer just about one decision in stoppage time; it has become a test of how far Scottish clubs can go in challenging the authority and accountability of those who run the game.

The next ruling will say plenty about where that line in the sand is really drawn.
