Moisés Caicedo's Injury Update Ahead of Chelsea vs Arsenal
Moisés Caicedo was nowhere to be seen when Chelsea’s teamsheet dropped for their Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday, Sept. 6 – a significant setback for Xabi Alonso just as the midfielder seemed to be edging back to full fitness.
The Ecuador international had already endured a stuttering start to the campaign. He was left out of Chelsea’s opener against Fulham, with Alonso explaining that a “minor setback” had halted his return. That absence extended into the Carabao Cup, where he also missed the midweek win over Luton Town.
His comeback finally arrived against Brighton last weekend, but it barely got going. Caicedo entered as a second-half substitute and lasted only 14 minutes before he had to come off again. Alonso later admitted the problem “wasn't something new,” a worrying hint that the issue had been lingering rather than solved.
Even so, there was late optimism around Stamford Bridge that he might make it in time for Arsenal. Alonso revealed the midfielder had pushed hard to be involved and came close to making the cut.
“He was close. But there is no point in taking a risk at this moment. We need to be cautious,” the Chelsea manager told Sky Sports before kick-off, underlining the decision to prioritize the long term over a single high-profile fixture.
So Chelsea went into a heavyweight London derby without their marquee midfield enforcer, trusting that caution now will spare them a much bigger problem later in the season.
