Middlesbrough Nears Deal for MLS Star Arfsten

Middlesbrough are closing on a deal for Columbus Crew standout Arfsten, with the USMNT wingback set to travel to England in the coming days to finalise a move that underlines the club’s intent to force their way back into the Premier League.

The fee will rise to as much as $7.5 million, according to sources, a package built on add-ons and bonuses that reflects both his current level and his upside. Columbus will also keep a sell-on clause, a clear sign they expect his value to climb again on the other side of the Atlantic.

Long pursuit, high conviction

This is not a late summer scramble. Boro have tracked the 25-year-old for some time and tried to bring him in last year, only to see that push stall. They were not alone. Toulouse also came to the table, tabling a bid for 2025, but the Championship side have now moved decisively to get the deal over the line.

News of the transfer first surfaced via The Athletic, and the outlines are now clear: if the final details fall into place, Arfsten will join a growing American core on Teesside.

He would become the third USMNT player in the squad, and there’s a familiar thread running through all of them — Columbus.

A Columbus connection in the Championship

Morris arrived from the Crew in 2024 and has since grown into one of the pillars of Michael Carrick’s side, driving Boro to last season’s promotion playoffs. They pushed all the way to the final, only to fall at the last hurdle and remain in the Championship.

That near miss has sharpened the club’s focus. The response has not been to retreat, but to double down.

They moved quickly to land Berhalter from Vancouver Whitecaps, refusing to wait for his contract to run down in the winter and instead paying around $2 million to bring him in this summer. Now comes Arfsten, a signing that would give Boro a trio of Americans with shared roots and a shared target: drag the club back into the top flight.

One of MLS’s best at his position

Arfsten does not arrive as a project. He has been one of MLS’s premier wingbacks over the last few seasons, a constant outlet down the flank and a regular presence in the league’s showcase events. His consistency has earned him All-Star nods in each of the last two summers, recognition of a player who has married engine, end product and reliability.

Drafted by the Crew in the 2023 MLS Draft, his rise has been steep. Within two years he had broken into the USMNT, making his debut in 2025 and quickly cementing his place in the pool. He already has 21 caps and a World Cup on his résumé.

This summer he made his bow on the biggest stage, coming off the bench against Belgium. It was a short cameo, but it placed him firmly on European scouting lists — and Boro are now ready to cash in on that early conviction.
