Mbappé Addresses Dembélé Rift Rumors Over Ballon d'Or Comments

Kylian Mbappé has moved to shut down talk of a rift with Ousmane Dembélé after a few pointed phrases around the Ballon d’Or race sparked headlines in France.

It started on September 11. Speaking to France Football about his chances of lifting the Ballon d’Or in London on October 26, the Real Madrid forward drew a sharp contrast between his own rise and that of his France teammate.

“He has always been considered a talented player. I have always been seen as the chosen one. I was at the top from the start. He had a different path, injuries, but he recovered well,” Mbappé said of his former PSG colleague.

The “chosen one” line stuck. It hung in the air for two days.

Then came Dembélé’s answer.

Without naming Mbappé, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner went on Ligue 1+ and deliberately leaned on the same phrase his international teammate had used.

“Throughout my entire career, I haven't said a single word, I have worked very hard. As I said, I have never been the chosen one, but I have worked hard, and last year I was rewarded with a fantastic season at PSG. And this year, we'll see, no pressure, calm.”

The echo was obvious. So were the headlines. With both men reporting for France duty, their reunion instantly became a subplot: two stars, one individual prize, one loaded expression.

Mbappé has now tried to put the story back in its box.

Speaking to L’Équipe at an event for his new sponsor, the France captain insisted the situation had already been cleared up privately.

“I’ve already talked it over with him and no, there are no tensions. He is a friend. I really think there is no problem at all in that regard, I’m very calm,” said the number 10.

For Mbappé, the whole episode says more about the environment around the national team than about any personal friction.

“During the Nations League period and with the French national team, you always have to look for a topic of debate, and I think this one is very well chosen,” he added, with a hint of irony.

The Ballon d’Or race will roll on, the debate will follow, and every word from France’s two attacking stars will be weighed again. But for now, at least, Mbappé is adamant: the only duel is on the pitch, not in the dressing room.
