Matty Cash Targets UEFA Super Cup Victory as Aston Villa Prepares to Face Paris Saint-Germain

Matty Cash is confident that Aston Villa can build on last season’s success by defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup. The defender acknowledged PSG as the best team globally but emphasized Villa’s determination to add another trophy at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig.

European Champions Clash for the Title

This will be Aston Villa’s second appearance in the UEFA Super Cup, where they meet reigning Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain. Villa earned their place by winning the Europa League with a convincing 3-0 win over Freiburg, securing the club’s first European title in 44 years. Meanwhile, PSG defended both their domestic league and European Cup titles, beating Arsenal on penalties in May's final.

Cash Praises Opponents but Stays Confident

The Poland international right-back told the club’s official site that the Super Cup is the perfect moment to finish what the team started last season. He praised Luis Enrique’s side, calling them “the best team in the world by a mile.”

“It’s massive. The manager has mentioned it recently; the season is over, but you still have the Super Cup, which finishes off the work you did last season,” said Cash.

He added, “We are facing a fantastic team who are obviously in demand. Hopefully, we can give them a good game. When we played them in the Champions League, we gave them a right good test. Villa Park was great that night, and hopefully, we can bring numbers to Austria and have a good go at it. It’s a special game for us and another chance to win a trophy.”

Emery’s Influence on Villa’s Winning Spirit

This encounter marks the third meeting between Villa and PSG after their 2024-25 Champions League quarter-final, which PSG won 5-4 on aggregate. The game also brings attention to manager Unai Emery, who has lost all three of his previous UEFA Super Cup appearances with Sevilla and Villarreal.

Cash highlighted the mentality Emery has instilled in the Villa squad:

“Since the manager arrived, he’s shown us what it takes to win. Last year, we talked about lifting trophies, and for several years now, we've consistently finished in the top six.”

He went on to say, “We set high standards, aiming to compete in Europe and perform well in the league. That’s what everyone wants. If you’re always near the top, you’re successful as a team and club. The levels and demands we have as a group mean we need to stay there. When you’re winning and constantly present, you want to maintain that status.”
