Marshall Men's Soccer Dominates VCU in Comeback Victory

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall took a punch, steadied itself, and then tore through VCU.

Down a goal inside seven minutes, the No. 15 Thundering Herd roared back with three unanswered strikes to beat the Rams 3-1 on Sunday night at Hoops Family Field, pushing their unbeaten start to 2-0-2.

Early error, early punishment

The night began with a jolt.

A miscue at the back left Ty Johnson clean through on goal, and the VCU forward made no mistake. He lifted the ball over goalkeeper Yurij Obert and tapped it home, silencing the home crowd and putting the visitors up 1-0 before the match had settled.

On the touchline, Chris Grassie watched a new-look group get an early lesson.

"We have a lot of new players. I think it takes time to gel and get the things we need," the Marshall head coach said afterward, stressing how his side’s passing is its language. "We're always communicating with our teammates around us and I think that communication has moments of pure clarity and moments of confusion. I think we have to ride this out. There's a very good team in there somewhere, but we have to go through the rigors to make sure we gel and get our communication spot on."

Apolinario ignites the response

The response came quickly, and it came from distance.

Eight minutes after the opener, Goncalo Machado slipped the ball to Thiago Apolinario with space in front of him. The Brazilian didn’t hesitate. From nearly 40 yards out, he unleashed a drive that caught VCU keeper Manuel Monteiro off guard and ripped into the net.

Level at 1-1. Apolinario’s third goal of the season. The stadium woke up.

VCU refused to shrink, though. The Rams carved out chances and asked questions of Marshall’s back line throughout the first half. Each time the pressure mounted, Obert answered. His best moment before the break came in the 31st minute, when he stood tall to preserve the deadlock and send the teams into halftime tied.

Roberto flips the game

Marshall came out of the tunnel with purpose.

Barely four and a half minutes into the second half, the match turned. A loose ball fell to Joao Roberto just outside the 18-yard box. He pounced, taking the deflection in stride and drilling his shot past Monteiro.

At 49:26, the Herd had their first lead of the night at 2-1. The tempo, the body language, the noise in the stands – everything shifted.

VCU still found pockets to attack, but Obert refused to let the advantage slip. He came up with another crucial save in the 59th minute, then again in the 85th, each stop tightening Marshall’s grip on the result.

Romberg slams the door

The Rams kept pushing, chasing an equalizer deep into stoppage time. Then came the mistake that ended it.

In the 90th minute, a VCU error left Carl Romberg alone in on goal. The Marshall attacker stayed composed and finished, slotting home the third and final goal to seal the win for MU.

Three goals after falling behind. A comeback built on long-range quality, sharper second-half execution, and a goalkeeper who answered when it mattered.

Marshall now turns its attention to another home test, a Friday night clash with Utah Valley at 7:15 p.m. The Herd are unbeaten, still searching for that “very good team” Grassie insists is in there.

Nights like this suggest it’s getting closer to the surface.
