Marseille Pursues Arsenal's Illan Meslier for Goalkeeping Reinforcements

Marseille have turned their attention to Arsenal’s new arrival Illan Meslier as they scramble for goalkeeping reinforcements before the summer window closes, according to reports in France.

The French club have been alerted to what has been described as Meslier’s “precarious situation” at the Emirates, with the 26-year-old already facing a battle for minutes just weeks after joining the Premier League champions.

From Elland Road mainstay to Emirates understudy

Meslier allowed his contract at Leeds United to run down and walked away from Elland Road on a free this summer, ending a six-year spell in which he became a central figure.

Across those six seasons, he made 215 appearances in all competitions, helping Leeds win promotion to the Premier League twice, in 2020 and again in 2025. For long stretches he was untouchable as first choice.

Then it all stopped.

Daniel Farke froze him out of the squad last season, and Meslier has not played a single competitive minute since March 2025. For a goalkeeper who once felt indispensable, the fall was abrupt.

Arsenal still saw an opportunity. They moved quickly, handing him a two-year deal that runs until June 2028 and positioning him as back-up to David Raya. On paper, it looked like a reset at the very top level.

Reality has been harsher. Meslier’s game time in pre-season was limited to substitute outings against Girona, Real Betis and Borussia Dortmund. When the serious stuff started, he disappeared from the matchday picture.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, not Meslier, took the spot on the bench for both the Community Shield and Friday night’s Premier League win over Coventry. For a player who arrived “very proud” and desperate to prove himself, it is a jarring early signal.

Marseille’s goalkeeper dilemma

That is where Marseille come in.

Foot Mercato report that the Ligue 1 side are actively searching for cover and competition for first-choice goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange while the window remains open. Behind De Lange, the cupboard is bare at senior level.

Bruno Genesio’s only other keepers, Jelle Van Neck and Theo Vermot, have yet to play a single first-team minute for Marseille. The risk is obvious for a club with European ambitions and a demanding fanbase.

Club officials have been working quietly to identify options. Meslier’s name has climbed near the top of that list.

The report claims Marseille’s hierarchy are “very impressed” by his profile, even though he has barely played in the last year. A 26-year-old with over 200 senior games, Premier League experience and promotion campaigns on his CV is a rare mid-window opportunity.

He has been earmarked as one of their “top targets” for the position, with the French side keen to exploit his current status as Arsenal’s third-choice option.

Finances in the way

There is a catch.

Before Marseille can move, they may need to cut numbers from their squad and trim the wage bill. Only then, the report stresses, will they be in a position to make a concrete offer to Arsenal.

For now, it is interest and intent rather than a formal bid. But the clock is ticking, and Marseille know that one injury to De Lange could derail their season.

Meslier’s Arsenal dream already under threat?

Meslier spoke with genuine emotion when he signed for Arsenal. He called it “a great day” and described the Gunners as “the biggest club in England”.

“I’m very happy and very proud to join Arsenal,” he told the club’s official channels. “I cannot wait to show the love that I’ve got for this badge, and I cannot wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club that needs to lift trophies again and again.”

He joined a squad already strengthened by the arrivals of Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis and Ezri Konsa, while Arsenal also triggered their £35 million option to sign Piero Hincapie permanently from Bayer Leverkusen. At the same time, Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior, Christian Norgaard and Karl Hein were allowed to leave.

Competition for places is brutal. Especially in goal.

Meslier came to north London to reboot his career at the top end of the game. Marseille now offer something different: the chance to be trusted again, to be a number one or at least a genuine challenger, rather than a name on a teamsheet few ever see.

With the window closing in fast, the question hangs over him already: stay and fight for a role that may never come, or jump now and reclaim his place in the spotlight?
