Marc Cucurella walked into Valdebebas with the ink barely dry on his contract and the echoes of his past still trailing behind him. A product of Barcelona’s famed academy, La Masia, he now pulls on the white of Real Madrid. In Spain, few moves carry more emotional weight. For Cucurella, it feels like the pinnacle.

Fresh from completing his medical, the full-back stepped onto the training pitch under José Mourinho for the first time, then in front of the microphones as a Real Madrid player. The significance was written all over his words.

“It is a source of pride. I think few people can say they have worn this shirt,” he told Marca, fully aware of the jersey he now represents. He spoke of the legends he grew up watching, of a club he called “the biggest in Europe,” and of a history that both inspires and demands.

For Cucurella, this is not just another transfer. It is the payoff for years of persistence.

“Being here today is a privilege and an honour, and above all a reward for all the effort I have put in throughout my career,” he said. “I have waited a long time, and it felt like it took a long time, but I am here now.”

For years, he watched those famous Real Madrid nights from a distance. The remontadas at the Bernabéu. The Champions League trophies lifted under the lights. He saw it all, but always as an outsider.

“As a spectator, I saw all those magical nights, the comebacks at the Bernabéu, and all the Champions League titles the team has lifted,” he recalled.

Now he steps into that same arena, no longer in the stands or in front of a television, but on the pitch, part of the story instead of a witness to it.

“As a player, and as a child starting to play football, it is very difficult to turn down the chance to play for a club like this,” he continued. “The opportunity came to me and I did not hesitate for a moment. Getting the chance to live it from the inside and take part in it is a very big responsibility, but it is also a beautiful and important challenge.”

Responsibility. Challenge. Two words that define life at Real Madrid. The margin for error is minimal, the expectations constant. Cucurella knows exactly where he has landed.

Early days under Mourinho

If the badge brings pressure, Mourinho brings clarity. The Portuguese coach has built his reputation on strong dressing rooms and clear messages, and Cucurella’s first impressions fit that image.

“A lot of confidence and spontaneity,” is how he described the environment. “We have to do on the pitch what we are good at, and above all enjoy ourselves. I think what we all want is to win and to have a great year.”
