Marc Cucurella Confident Real Madrid Will Thrive Under Jose Mourinho

Marc Cucurella is optimistic about Real Madrid's prospects this season after joining from Chelsea in a £47.5 million deal. The Spanish left-back expressed excitement about working under Jose Mourinho, who recently returned to manage the Santiago Bernabeu side.

Mourinho Brings Confidence to the Squad

After his first training session with the team, Cucurella praised Mourinho’s influence on the players. Speaking to Real Madrid TV, he said the coach has brought "a lot of confidence and naturalness" to their preparations. He emphasized that the focus remains on playing their game and enjoying the process, with the clear goal of winning and having a strong season.

Living a Childhood Dream

Although Cucurella was developed at Barcelona's La Masia academy, the chance to join Real Madrid, Europe’s most decorated club, was irresistible. Fresh off helping Spain win the World Cup, he described the club as the ultimate destination in football. After successful years in the Premier League with Brighton and Chelsea, the opportunity to work with Mourinho and play for the 15-time European champions sealed his decision to return to Spain.

“As a kid starting out playing football, then having the opportunity to play for a club like this, it’s very hard to turn down. When the opportunity came, I didn’t hesitate for a second. I’ve seen all those magical nights, those comebacks at the Bernabeu, all the Champions League titles they’ve lifted. To experience it firsthand and be part of it is a huge responsibility, but also a very beautiful and important challenge,” Cucurella said.

A Significant Step in His Career

At 28, Cucurella’s transfer marks a major milestone. Having made 163 appearances for Chelsea and helped them win the Conference League and Club World Cup in 2025, he joins a squad bolstered by signings like Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, and Denzel Dumfries. He recognizes the high standards at Real Madrid and views this move as recognition for his efforts across clubs including Getafe and Eibar.

“It’s an honour – not many can say they’ve worn this jersey. We’ve seen great legends here; it’s the biggest club in Europe. Being here today is a privilege, an honour, and above all, a reward for all the effort I’ve put into my career,” Cucurella added.

Preparing for the New Season

Real Madrid are entering the final stage of preseason ahead of the La Liga kickoff. Upcoming friendlies against Deportivo de A Coruna and Schalke will provide Mourinho chances to integrate his new recruits and refine his tactical plans. The official league campaign starts on August 22 with an away match against Espanyol.
