Manuel Rui Costa Returns to Florence for Fiorentina's 100th Anniversary Match

Manuel Rui Costa's Emotional Homecoming

After a quarter of a century, Manuel Rui Costa returned to Florence to take part in Fiorentina's centenary legends match held at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on September 2, 2026. The Portuguese icon, now president of Benfica, played alongside other club greats in a thrilling 7-3 exhibition win against Operazione Nostalgia.

This special event brought together celebrated figures from Fiorentina’s past, including Gabriel Batistuta, Roberto Baggio, and Franck Ribery. Rui Costa’s appearance was among the most eagerly awaited moments for the 20,000 fans who filled the stadium.

Heartfelt Reflections and a Call for Success

Rui Costa shared the personal reasons behind his return, emphasizing the strong bond he holds with Florence after spending seven years there during his playing career. He said, "I didn’t come here just to please people, but for myself. I spent the seven most beautiful years of my life in Florence, and I really wanted to relive those emotions tonight."

The former captain also voiced a wish for the club's future triumphs. Reflecting on his greatest pride as captain when winning the Coppa Italia in 2001, he added, "Honestly, I don’t like the fact that I am the last captain to deliver a trophy to this club. Florence and Fiorentina deserve to taste victory again."

Franck Ribery Rekindles Viola Spirit

Franck Ribery expressed joy at wearing the purple jersey once more, sharing the pitch with former teammate Luca Toni. He remarked, "Look at all these fans! This is truly incredible! When we get back on the pitch and touch the ball again like in the past, my great passion for football immediately ignites."

Ribery thanked the supporters warmly, acknowledging their strong presence throughout the centenary celebrations.

Centenary Celebrations Highlight Club Legacy

The legends match capped a week of events in Florence, featuring a torchlight procession by the Curva Fiesole supporters and stunning purple illuminations on historic landmarks. While Fiorentina’s first team deals with early challenges in Serie A, the festivities offered a vivid reminder of the club’s rich heritage.

Departing Florence, Rui Costa and the returning legends hope the current squad will soon bring new trophies to the club’s cabinet.
