Manchester United Target Youri Tielemans for Midfield Rebuild
Manchester United are closing in on Youri Tielemans after moving to activate the Aston Villa midfielder’s £35 million release clause, with the Belgian keen on a switch to Old Trafford, sources have told ESPN.
The 29-year-old, a central figure in Villa’s Europa League triumph last season, has indicated he wants the chance to join United despite the Midlands club’s desire to keep him. After three years at Villa Park, the lure of leading a revamped United midfield appears too strong.
Tielemans’ stock has rarely been higher. He was instrumental in Villa’s European run and carried that form onto the international stage, scoring twice in Belgium’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Senegal in the World Cup round of 32. United see him as a ready-made operator for the Premier League and Europe, not a project.
Midfield overhaul takes shape
Tielemans is set to become part of a broader reshaping of United’s engine room. He would join Andrey Santos, with a £50m deal already agreed with Chelsea and the clubs now working through the final formalities before confirming the move.
The plan is clear: fresh legs, technical quality, and depth in the middle of the pitch. Santos offers energy and potential; Tielemans brings experience, composure and a proven record in big matches. United are building a new core, not just adding squad pieces.
There is movement behind them as well. Goalkeeper Karl Darlow is close to arriving from Leeds United, brought in to push current No. 1 Senne Lammens and strengthen competition in a position United have been eager to secure.
Éderson deal stalls
Not every target is progressing. United have stepped back from a move for Atalanta midfielder Éderson, despite a £35m fee having been agreed between the clubs before the World Cup.
The deal has stalled and is “not moving forward” at this stage, according to sources. United have not disclosed the exact reason for the pause, and crucially, they have not ruled out returning to the negotiating table later in the summer.
For now, the focus is on getting Tielemans and Santos through the door and Darlow signed off. If those deals land as expected, the shape of United’s season will look very different — and so will the heart of their team.
