Manchester United’s youngsters tore into their UEFA Youth League campaign with the kind of statement performance that turns heads at Carrington and beyond, dismantling Sabah FK 5–0 at Leigh Sports Village.

With the competition mirroring the senior side’s Champions League group stage, United’s U21s boss stepped in to guide a makeshift U19 group. On this evidence, the blend looks ruthless.

Lightning start

United were in front almost before Sabah had settled. Barely two minutes played, Jim Thwaites whipped in a vicious wide free-kick and Amir Ibragimov darted across the near post to turn it home. One delivery, one touch, one goal. Sabah were immediately on the back foot.

JJ Gabriel nearly doubled the lead moments later. Picking up the ball on the edge of the box, he let fly with a powerful drive that forced the goalkeeper into a sharp tip over the bar. The pattern was set: United camped in Sabah’s half, Sabah clinging on.

The visitors’ only real outlet came through the tireless running of Shahin Ibrahimov, who tried to break away on the counter whenever he could. Each time, though, red shirts swarmed back. Isolated and outnumbered, he had no support and no way through.

The pressure told again in the 16th minute. Bendito Mantato’s cross skidded its way across the penalty area and reached Jacob Watson, who adjusted smartly and drilled in on his weaker right foot. Two goals up, United were cruising.

There was a setback on 20 minutes when Godwill Kukonki, making his first start of the season, rolled his ankle and had to come off, with Rafe McCormack sent on in his place. The change did nothing to disrupt United’s rhythm.

Right on the stroke of half-time, Gabriel finally had his goal. Junior Brown’s effort inside the box was blocked, the ball broke loose, and Gabriel reacted quickest, snapping it into the net to make it 3–0. The scoreline matched the dominance.

Relentless dominance

United came out after the interval looking hungry for more. Brown almost delivered a fourth in style, cutting in from the left and bending a curling effort towards the top-right corner. The strike looked destined for the net until the Sabah keeper produced a stunning save to claw it away.

United kept coming. Wave after wave of attacks, bodies flooding forward, shots raining in. Yet the fourth goal took its time.

It finally arrived late in the second half, and it belonged to Gabriel again. Inside the box, he coolly stepped past his marker and passed the ball into the far-right corner with the assurance of a seasoned finisher.

Sabah were reeling, and United smelled blood. Thwaites, already influential from set pieces, split the visiting backline with a superb through ball that sliced Sabah open. Gabriel raced in behind, steadied himself and finished to complete his hat-trick and seal the 5–0 rout.

By the final whistle, the numbers underlined the gulf. United racked up 44 attempts on goal. Sabah failed to register a single effort against Cameron Byrne-Hughes.
