Manchester United Target Ismaila Sarr as Versatile Forward

Manchester United have set their sights on Crystal Palace star Ismaila Sarr as they step up their search for a versatile forward this summer – but prising him out of south London will be anything but straightforward.

INEOS want an attacker who can play across the frontline. Inside Old Trafford, Sarr has been pushed to the top of that list.

The Senegal international is coming off the best season of his career. He lit up Crystal Palace’s historic UEFA Conference League triumph, scoring nine times in the competition and walking away with the Player of the Season award. He backed that up in the Premier League with nine more league goals, finishing on 20 in all competitions and carrying Palace’s attack through long stretches of the campaign.

Those numbers have cut through in Manchester.

United have now made contact with Sarr’s representatives to formally register their interest and to get a clearer picture of his situation. Club sources viewed him as a serious option even before the World Cup in North America. His performances there only hardened that stance.

Sarr and Senegal crashed out against Belgium on Wednesday in brutal fashion, surrendering a 2-0 lead in the final five minutes. The exit hurt, but Sarr’s tournament did not. He finished with four goals and one assist, showcasing his threat on the biggest stage.

More importantly for United’s recruitment team, he showed he can operate through the middle as a central striker, not just from the flanks. That flexibility has pushed INEOS to intensify their interest, even with the clear understanding that Palace will demand a premium fee.

Price rising, pressure building

Sarr has largely been used from wide areas at Selhurst Park, but his work leading the line for Senegal revealed another layer to his game. It is exactly the kind of profile United are chasing.

The club still see the addition of at least two midfielders as the priority this window, yet the plan to bring in a forward who can cover multiple attacking roles remains firmly in place. That need grows with Joshua Zirkzee expected to move on and Marcus Rashford’s future still unresolved.

As previously reported, there is a very real possibility Rashford ends up back at Old Trafford if a permanent move away cannot be agreed. Even so, United’s preference is to find a solution that takes him off the wage bill and opens up space in the squad.

So the search for attacking reinforcements goes on.

Crysencio Summerville of West Ham United is another name high on their scouting reports after an eye-catching World Cup, with United staff watching him closely in recent weeks. Yet Sarr, on current form and versatility, may now have nudged ahead of the Dutchman on the club’s internal shortlist.

Palace only signed Sarr in 2024 for under £15 million. That figure already looks like a steal. After his outstanding campaign, the Eagles are understood to be looking for more than triple that outlay before they would even consider serious offers. With three years left on his contract, Palace hold the leverage and they know it.

They are not the only ones watching the market. Juventus have also been tracking Sarr’s progress and are monitoring his situation, adding heavyweight competition to any bidding war.

Whether Palace are prepared to entertain offers this summer is another matter entirely. New boss Pierre Sage has inherited a genuine match-winner and, after Sarr’s World Cup displays, he has every reason to dig his heels in and make it clear he does not want to lose his star attacker.

United’s new reality

All of this unfolds under tighter financial scrutiny at Old Trafford. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made it plain he wants transfer fees and wages kept under control, a stance that has already had consequences.

That approach ultimately cost United the chance to sign Mateus Fernandes, with fresh details emerging over what the club actually put on the table and why they fell short.

Now the question is simple: in this new, more disciplined era, will United push hard enough – and pay enough – to turn their admiration of Ismaila Sarr into a deal, or watch another prime target slip away?
