Manchester United Pursues Manu Kone as Roma Prepares for Bids
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is gathering pace – and all roads now lead to Manu Kone.
Having already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, United are pushing for a third central midfielder this summer and have turned their attention to the Roma man, whose World Cup run with France ends with Saturday’s third-place play-off against England.
Until now, Kone has kept everyone at arm’s length. The 25-year-old asked his representatives at Excellence Sport Nation (ESN) to park any transfer talks until after the tournament. ESN, who also look after Bryan Mbeumo and France team-mates Aurelien Tchouameni, Jules Kounde and Mike Maignan, have had no shortage of calls.
United are among those to have approached his camp. Chelsea are in the frame too, having raised Kone’s name during conversations with Roma about Alejandro Garnacho. The Premier League pair are circling the same prize.
Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport reports that both clubs are expected to firm up their interest with concrete offers in the coming days. The mood around the player is clear: Kone is open to a move and is said to be willing to sign for United.
There is one complication. His dream move is Paris Saint-Germain.
Kone has long viewed PSG as the pinnacle, but with a switch to the back-to-back Champions League winners not currently on the table, the door has swung open for others. Corriere dello Sport claims United have moved into pole position, with Chelsea lurking but not yet matching their intent.
The timeline is tight. A decision is expected once his World Cup is over, with next week viewed in Italy as a potential tipping point for his future.
Roma’s stance is equally straightforward. They want around £47 million for Kone, a fee that would generate a profit of about £34m and, crucially, help repair their books.
UEFA hit the club with a £5m fine earlier this summer for breaching the terms of their settlement agreement and for running a squad cost ratio above 70%. A major sale this window is not just desirable; it is close to essential. Cashing in on Kone would go a long way towards closing that chapter and easing their Financial Fair Play concerns.
Gian Piero Gasperini has not hidden the reality. Speaking to Radio Rai 1, the Roma head coach laid out the financial backdrop they are working under.
"The financial fair play conditions are never exactly precise or defined, they vary from team to team. It's undeniable that Roma know that we have to balance the budgets, which has been tough in recent years.
"I'd hoped that entry into the Champions League would have been enough, but budgets are important for clubs and must be respected. I think there will be more clarity in the coming weeks."
The subtext is obvious: important players may have to go.
Kone is at the front of that queue. His form has made sure of it. Gasperini was quick to underline just how far the midfielder has come in the last year.
"Kone had a great first half of the season, and then was out of action due to injury for a bit during the second half. He's having a great World Cup.
"He didn't play with the France national team last year, but now he's been able to claim a starting spot. It shows his potential and the work he's put in."
That rise – from squad hopeful to World Cup starter – is exactly what appeals to United. They are targeting a midfielder in his prime, already hardened by Serie A and now tested on the biggest international stage, yet still with room to grow.
For Chelsea, Kone represents another opportunity to refresh a midfield that has been turned over repeatedly in recent windows. For Roma, he is both a cornerstone and a lifeline.
The pressure will sharpen once the final whistle blows on France’s World Cup. Kone has delayed the decision for as long as possible. Now the market is ready to close in.
United have made their move. Roma have named their price. Kone’s dream points towards Paris, but his next step may run through Old Trafford instead.
