Andrey Santos Prepares for Manchester United Debut Against Wrexham

Andrey Santos is poised for his first glimpse of life in Manchester United red on Saturday, named in the travelling squad for the pre-season friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki.

The 22-year-old Brazilian, Michael Carrick’s first permanent signing, arrived from Chelsea on Monday in a deal that could rise to £50 million. He has barely had time to unpack, but a full week at Carrington has been enough for Carrick to decide he is ready to join a 25-man group that blends academy promise with established names.

Santos steps into the spotlight

United’s midfield is being rebuilt in Carrick’s image, and Santos is central to that plan. With fellow new signing Youri Tielemans among a clutch of senior players still on an extended break after the World Cup, the former Chelsea man has an early chance to stake out his territory.

The squad for Finland underlines the transition United are managing. Harry Maguire, Bryan Mbeumo, Patrick Dorgu, Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, Ayden Heaven, Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee all travel, giving the side a strong spine of first‑team regulars. Around them, Carrick has sprinkled some of the club’s most talked-about youngsters: highly rated full-back Harry Amass, creative winger Shea Lacey and a string of emerging midfielders.

Jaydan Kamason will push for minutes at right-back, while Jacob Devaney, Dan Gore and Jim Thwaites add youthful legs and energy in midfield. Twin prospects Tyler and Jack Fletcher are also on board, another sign that this tour is as much about fast-tracking talent as it is about sharpening senior players.

Sesko missing, opportunity knocking

One notable absentee is Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenia striker, who missed the final three matches of last season with a shin injury, has stayed behind to continue working towards full fitness. His omission reshapes the attacking picture.

With Sesko sidelined, the door swings open for young forwards Chidi Obi and Ethan Wheatley to catch Carrick’s eye. Both travel, both know these are the types of games that can change a manager’s mind about transfer priorities. JJ Gabriel, however, does not make the cut for this leg of pre-season.

In goal, new arrival Karl Darlow is another to sit this one out. The experienced keeper, signed on a free from Leeds earlier in the week, has not travelled. That leaves veteran Tom Heaton as the senior option between the posts, supported by Radek Vitek and Dermot Mee, who will hope for at least a slice of action.

Wrexham tune up for U.S. tour

On the opposite side, Wrexham arrive in Finland with their own plans and their own absentees. Phil Parkinson’s team are using the fixture as a key staging post before they fly to the United States next week for a high-profile run of friendlies against Leeds, Liverpool and Sunderland.

Parkinson is broadly satisfied with where his squad stands.

“We're where we need to be in terms of fitness,” he said. “We've got a few lads, like most clubs, who have come back in later, with one or two niggly things which have carried over from last season.

“However, we're not overly concerned with those and the lads are in a good place. There'll be a few who aren't quite ready for the game at the weekend and will be training here instead.”

Two of those missing are Josh Windass and Max Cleworth. Windass has been managing a minor calf problem.

“Josh has been running this week,” Parkinson explained. “He's had a slight problem with his calf, but he's in great shape and there's no need to rush him too much.”

Cleworth’s situation is more long-running, with an Achilles issue that has required careful handling.

“Max had a problem with his Achilles, which has been an ongoing problem. But we feel this off-season, and this slow build-up for him now, will do him good.”

A different kind of test

For United, Helsinki is not about silverware or statements. It is about rhythm, combinations, and the first sight of how Carrick’s summer ideas look on grass. For Santos, it could be the moment his United story moves from ink on a contract to reality on a pitch.

If he settles quickly, and if the kids around him seize their chance, this low-key friendly against ambitious opponents could say a lot more about United’s season ahead than the venue or the date suggest.
