Manchester United are not finished yet. Six signings are already through the door for Michael Carrick this summer, but the recruitment drive shows no sign of slowing – and the next move could be a raid on Spain for one of La Liga’s most talked-about young defenders.

United ready to trigger Salinas clause

Jorge Salinas, just 19 and already a mainstay at Real Racing Club de Santander, has become the latest name pushed towards Old Trafford. According to Spanish outlet SPORT, United are prepared to go where Barcelona will not: straight for his release clause.

The figure is clear enough – €16m, around £14m. For a teenager who only made his first-team debut in 2024, that number tells its own story. Salinas has risen quickly, imposing himself as one of the standout young defenders in Spanish football, drawing admiring glances from both Barca and United.

Barcelona like him. They just don’t like the price. SPORT report that the Catalan club have no intention of paying the clause, opening the door for United to move first and decisively.

Atletico waiting on Ruggeri domino

The chase, though, is not a straight sprint between England and Catalonia. Atletico Madrid are lurking, ready to act once another piece of their defensive puzzle falls into place.

Sport Witness relay that Atleti intend to move for Salinas once Matteo Ruggeri completes his switch to Aston Villa. Villa are said to have agreed a deal worth €18m plus €6m in bonuses – around £20m – with Los Rojiblancos for Ruggeri.

Once that sale is confirmed, Atletico’s attention is expected to turn fully to Salinas. United may be willing to trigger the clause. Atletico may be ready with a project and a pathway in Spain. The market rarely leaves room for hesitation.

Racing fighting to keep their gem

Back in Santander, they are trying to hold the line. Racing boss Jorge Salinas – no relation to the defender – has been blunt about the situation. He insists both Jorge Salinas the player and Gustavo Puerta do not want to leave this summer.

“Their professionalism doesn't surprise me. What surprises me is that people are constantly talking about the departure of two of our players [Salinas and Puerta], when they have contracts and are our players,” he said earlier this week.

Then came the key message. “They're very important to us. I don't want them to leave. And they show every day that they don't either.

“But we know how this world works and there are release clauses. If a team comes along and pays the clause, they cease to be our players."

That is the tightrope Racing are walking. They can argue, persuade, and plan. They cannot block a club willing to meet the number written into the contract.

Racing sporting director Chema Aragon struck the same resigned tone. He knows exactly where his club sits in the food chain.

"There's little you can do if a giant appears," Aragon admitted last week. "We value the assets we have, we consider them important.

“For the club, at this time, there is no other option than to try to strengthen the team and not weaken it by losing stars. The reality is that the club that wants him has to come along with an offer."

The message is clear. Racing will fight to keep Salinas, but the rules are written in ink, not emotion. Pay the clause, and the conversation ends.

United, Barcelona, Atletico. A €16m release clause. A 19-year-old defender who has grown too quickly to stay off the radar. The only question now is which of Europe’s giants decides that this is the moment to test Racing’s resolve – and the player’s ambitions.
