Manchester United Goalkeeping Shake-Up: Vítek Joins Middlesbrough, Bayindir Heads to Celta Vigo

Manchester United’s goalkeeping department is being ripped up and rewritten, and two more names are about to be filed under “departures”.

Radek Vítek is set to join Middlesbrough in a deal worth up to £14 million, while fellow goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is closing in on a season-long loan to Celta Vigo.

For United, it is a calculated clear-out. For Michael Carrick and Middlesbrough, it is a statement investment.

Vítek cashes in on Bristol City breakthrough

Vítek’s rise has not been instant, but it has been steady and convincing. The 22-year-old Czech goalkeeper arrived at United from Sigma Olomouc in 2020 as a long-term project, spent time learning the trade on loan at Accrington and Blau-Weiss Linz, and then truly came of age at Bristol City.

That season at Ashton Gate changed everything. His form there has pushed him to the brink of a permanent move to a club that fell just short of promotion last term, with Boro beaten in the Championship playoff final. Carrick wants a goalkeeper he can grow with; Vítek fits the bill.

United, though, are not walking away blind. The deal with Middlesbrough includes matching rights and a buy-back clause, underlining how highly they still rate him. The package could climb to around £14m with bonuses, and United have also secured up to a 35 per cent sell-on clause. If Vítek’s career explodes on Teesside, Old Trafford will feel the benefit on the balance sheet.

New look between the posts

These exits are not happening in isolation. United have already reshaped the top of their goalkeeping hierarchy.

Senne Lammens holds the number one shirt, and he has been joined this summer by Karl Darlow, the Wales international arriving on a free transfer. That move followed Andre Onana’s return to Trabzonspor on loan, another big name shifting out to make room for a leaner, more clearly defined pecking order.

The message is obvious: fewer goalkeepers, clearer roles, more flexibility in the market.

Vítek’s sale, cushioned by buy-back protection, is part of that strategy. So is Bayindir’s next step.

Bayindir heads for LaLiga audition

Altay Bayindir’s time at Old Trafford has largely been spent in the shadows. Since joining from Fenerbahce in 2023, the Turkey international has mostly acted as cover, rarely dislodging the options ahead of him.

Now he is close to a move that finally offers a full season as a genuine contender. Celta Vigo are on the verge of sealing a loan that will run for the entire campaign, with the LaLiga side covering his wages and performance-related bonuses built into the agreement.

The pressure will be real, and so will the opportunity. Celta hold an option to make the transfer permanent, reportedly for around £3.5m, and a sell-on clause would be included if they decide to trigger it and later move him on. For Bayindir, it is a chance to prove he belongs as a first-choice goalkeeper in a major European league. For United, it is a low-risk way of turning a backup into a potential future fee.

The revolving door in United’s goalkeeping department is spinning quickly now. The question is not just who guards the posts this season, but which of these moves they might one day wish they had kept in-house.
