Manchester United Eye David Raum as Left-Back Solution

Manchester United have turned their attention to RB Leipzig defender David Raum as they scramble for a late-window solution at left-back, but doubts inside the club over his age and price are slowing any move.

United have poured close to £150m into rebuilding their midfield this summer, bringing in Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. That spree has left other areas exposed, and nowhere is the gap more obvious than at left-back, where Luke Shaw’s fitness record has forced the club back into the market.

Lewis Hall was identified as the ideal long-term answer. The Newcastle United defender is understood to be United’s top target for the position, with the player open to the idea, but any deal has been ruled out for this window. With that avenue closed, United have been pushed towards shortlisting alternatives.

Raum is firmly on that list.

The 28-year-old, rated at around £34m, is heading into the final year of his Leipzig contract and has just come off a productive Bundesliga campaign, registering ten goal involvements from left-back. That attacking output, combined with his experience, makes him an attractive stopgap option for a club that cannot afford to get this call wrong.

The player himself has not shut the door on a move.

“I’m now heading into the final year of my contract,” Raum said earlier this week. “I don’t need to lie about the fact that inquiries are coming in – that’s obviously to be expected. But as things stand, I’m looking forward to the season with Leipzig.”

Inside Leipzig, the situation is clear: they would like around €40m for the Germany international, but accept that his contract position weakens their hand and could force them to accept a lower fee.

That is exactly where United are hesitating. According to BILD, relayed by Sport Witness, the Old Trafford hierarchy are “dithering” over whether to commit a “relatively large sum” to a 28-year-old, when a younger full-back with greater resale value and development potential might still emerge late in the window.

Time, though, is running out.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has underlined that United’s search for a left-back is active and ongoing, and that the club are determined to bring in reinforcements before the deadline.

“I think it could be busy for Man Utd in this final four or five days of the window because I can guarantee to you that Manchester United are still looking for a solution at left-back,” Romano said on his YouTube channel. “So Man Utd are working to sign a new left-back. I would not be surprised if they end up with a solution for a player who can be almost a guarantee.”

United have already explored a marquee option. Romano revealed they held talks with agent Jorge Mendes over Alejandro Balde, but quickly backed away once the financial package became clear.

“Maybe not a superstar name like Balde because they considered Balde. They had a call with Jorge Mendes one week ago, but the deal is too expensive. Transfer fee, salary, too expensive. United are not going to do that, at least for now,” he explained.

That has pushed United towards a more pragmatic profile. Romano likened the type of deal they are chasing to the short-term move for Sergio Reguilon, who arrived on loan from Tottenham to plug a gap rather than transform the team.

“Obviously I’m not saying Reguilon but that kind of player, experienced left-back who can provide competition, who can also be an international profile. So Manchester United are exploring this kind of options. So left-back is expected to be an area where Man Utd want to improve before the deadline. I expect them to sign there.”

Raum fits that brief almost perfectly: experienced, international, proven at a high level, and available due to his contract situation. The question now is whether United are willing to pay for reliability at 28, or whether they hold their nerve in the hope that a younger, cheaper solution appears in the final days of the window.
