Manchester United have been handed a sliver of encouragement in their long-running admiration of Aurelien Tchouameni – and the price being whispered around Europe sounds more like a clearance sale than a negotiation with Real Madrid.

A report in England claims United could prise the France international out of the Bernabeu for £68 million this summer. For a 24-year-old Champions League and LaLiga winner, in a market where defensive midfielders are changing hands for eye-watering sums, that figure lands like a jolt.

A new deal… but an open door?

Earlier this month, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported that Tchouameni had agreed a new contract with Real Madrid running until 2031. On paper, that should have shut the conversation down. Long-term deal, key age, starting role. Case closed.

Yet Madrid have not officially announced the extension. The silence has allowed speculation to breathe, and at Old Trafford, that kind of silence is rarely ignored.

Manchester United reporter Andy Mitten lifted the lid on the uncertainty during an appearance on Talk of the Devils on July 14. He revealed that after the contract news broke, he contacted a source in Madrid and received a telling message back: “They could still sell him.”

Not “no chance.” Not “forget it.” They could still sell him.

Mitten stressed that Tchouameni is “perfectly happy in Madrid” and that this would not be a player agitating for a move. But he also underlined a crucial point: if the situation changes and Madrid decide to cash in, Tchouameni “would be perfectly happy to play for Manchester United.”

That’s the crack in the door United have been staring at for months.

Madrid’s need to “sell big”

The logic behind any sale lies not in Tchouameni’s performances, but in Real Madrid’s ambition. Mitten explained that voices close to the Spanish club made one thing clear: Madrid want to buy big, so they need to sell big.

So who funds the next galáctico wave?

Fede Valverde, Mitten noted, has been earmarked as a future captain. Eduardo Camavinga, for all his talent, would not command the same fee. Tchouameni, the only senior specialist defensive midfielder in the squad, is the one who ticks every financial box, even if it makes little sporting sense to let him go.

Mitten admitted the move “looks improbable” and always has. Any chance, he argued, depends on Madrid taking the brutal business decision to offload one of their very best players because “money dictates a lot of things in football.”

The report claims new Madrid manager Jose Mourinho had initially planned to keep Tchouameni but is now “ready to sell” the Frenchman if it allows the club to launch a serious push for Rodri, Spain’s metronome and arguably the most influential defensive midfielder in world football.

The calculation is ruthless. Trade one elite holding midfielder, already embedded in the squad, to chase another who would arrive at a higher cost and from a direct Champions League rival. For Madrid, it would be a high-stakes reshuffle. For United, it could be the opening they’ve been waiting for.

A bargain in a distorted market

Strip away the noise and the number still jumps off the page. £68m for Aurelien Tchouameni, in this market, feels light.
