Manchester United's £80m Midfield Overhaul Under Carrick
Manchester United’s summer rebuild under Michael Carrick is accelerating, and the next step could come with a hefty price tag attached.
With one midfield deal all but lined up and another target identified, United look prepared to spend around £80million to land their next major signing as they gear up for a return to Champions League football.
Carrick’s midfield overhaul gathers pace
United have already pushed through an agreement worth around £38.8m to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson, a move designed to inject energy and balance into the centre of the pitch after Casemiro’s departure.
Casemiro’s exit has left a gaping hole in United’s midfield structure. Carrick, a former master of that very role, has made it clear through the club’s actions that the spine of the team is his priority. Ederson is set to be the first piece. The second could be even more expensive.
According to reports, United have made contact over a move for West Ham playmaker Mateus Fernandes, as they look to pair the Brazilian with the Portugal international in a revamped engine room.
Fernandes price set as relegation bites
West Ham’s relegation has triggered a financial reckoning in east London. Forecast losses of around £100m are expected to push the club into a series of player sales, and Fernandes sits right at the top of that list of assets.
The Times report that West Ham have slapped an £80m valuation on the midfielder after an eye-catching debut season at the London Stadium. His form has not gone unnoticed. Arsenal are also credited with interest, setting up the prospect of a Premier League tug of war.
ESPN suggest United have already approached the Hammers to explore a deal, testing the waters as they look to build on the Ederson agreement and lock down their midfield for the long term.
If United meet that valuation, the combined outlay on Ederson and Fernandes would represent a decisive, expensive statement about how Carrick wants his side to play when the Champions League anthem returns to Old Trafford.
Maguire steps into the studio
While United’s recruitment drive dominates the headlines on the pitch, one of their senior figures is preparing for a different kind of role this summer.
Harry Maguire has missed out on Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the upcoming World Cup, the second straight major tournament he will sit out after injury ruled him out of Euro 2024. For a defender who once stood as a guaranteed pick for his country, it marks another sharp turn in a turbulent spell.
He will not, however, be disappearing from view.
Maguire is set to join Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards on The Rest is Football podcast during the tournament. The trio of former England internationals will broadcast from a studio overlooking Times Square in New York across 40 episodes, with Maguire adding the perspective of an active Premier League defender on the outside looking in.
As Carrick reshapes United’s midfield and the club prepares for the glare of Champions League nights again, Maguire’s move into the media spotlight raises a sharper question: is this just a side project during a summer off, or the first sign of a new chapter for a player whose place at the top level can no longer be taken for granted?
