Manchester City’s Rodri Faces Surgery and Transfer Talks with Real Madrid

Manchester City’s plans for the new season have been hit from two directions at once – the operating table and the Bernabéu boardroom.

Rodri, the metronome of City’s midfield and the man Pep Guardiola built his structure around, has undergone minor back surgery just weeks before the Community Shield against Arsenal. At the same time, Real Madrid have opened talks to sign him, turning what might have been a straightforward pre-season absence into a full-blown saga.

Maresca’s first headache

Enzo Maresca, stepping into one of the most demanding jobs in European football, would have expected to lean heavily on Rodri as he stamps his own imprint on Guardiola’s all-conquering side. Few players in world football control a game like the Spain international, and City’s rhythm so often runs through him.

His chances of starting at Wembley next month are now virtually gone.

Even without the surgery, Rodri was already up against the clock. He went all the way to the final day of the World Cup, which means his mandated summer break runs right into the week of the Community Shield. The plan was always going to be a late return, a gentle reintroduction, careful minutes.

Then came the medical update: City confirmed the 28‑year‑old has undergone successful minor back surgery and will need a short spell of rehabilitation. The club do not expect a long lay-off, but “short” and “match sharp for Arsenal” are very different things.

For Maresca, it means his first competitive game in charge is likely to come without the one player who most reliably knits City together.

Madrid circle – and Rodri’s stance is clear

The injury would have been enough of a concern. The transfer noise around Rodri turns it into something more serious.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid have made contact with Manchester City over a deal, with president Florentino Pérez giving the move the green light. This is not a speculative enquiry. This is Madrid doing what Madrid do: identifying the best in the world in a key position and testing the resolve of the club that owns him.

The report goes further. Romano claims it has long been Rodri’s dream to play for Real Madrid and that he has been pushing for the move for a considerable period. City, fully aware of his status in the squad, are braced for a battle.

Madrid have indicated they are ready to go beyond €50m (£42.8m). That figure would barely open the conversation in Manchester. City are expected to demand significantly more for a player who has been central to their domestic and European dominance, and who is still in his prime.

City anticipate other elite clubs entering the race, but Rodri’s preference is clear: he wants Madrid. That gives the Spanish giants a crucial advantage as negotiations move from polite contact to serious numbers.

Arsenal get a break – for now

All of this lands on Arsenal’s desk as an unexpected bonus ahead of the Community Shield. Mikel Arteta knows better than anyone the value of a controlling midfielder at City; taking Rodri out of that equation changes the entire feel of the contest.

With his World Cup exertions, his late holiday, and now the back operation, the prospect of Rodri lining up at Wembley is now remote. Arsenal, chasing any marginal gain they can find in their pursuit of City, will not complain.

Beyond that curtain-raiser, the calendar offers City time. The Premier League meeting between the two sides does not arrive until 28 November, with only the possibility of a League Cup clash in October breaking that gap. By then, one way or another, this story will have moved on.

Either Rodri will be back in sky blue, anchoring Maresca’s new-look midfield and brushing off an early-summer scare. Or he will be in white, walking out at the Bernabéu as the latest centrepiece of Madrid’s next great team.

City have built an era with Rodri at its heart. The question now is whether this is just a brief interruption to that dominance, or the first sign that the core of Guardiola’s masterpiece is starting to be peeled away.
