Manchester City Targets Enzo Fernandez as Rodri Departure Looms

Manchester City’s midfield, the heartbeat of their recent dominance, could be ripped open this summer. And Enzo Fernandez is being lined up as the man to stitch it back together.

Rodri, the metronome of four title-winning seasons, is edging closer to what has been described as an emotional departure. Inside the club, the prospect is being treated as real, not hypothetical. Outside it, the transfer market is already circling.

Former City financial adviser Stefan Borson believes the champions are preparing for life without their No.16 – and that Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez sits firmly in the frame.

Speaking to Football Insider, Borson outlined a busy few weeks ahead at the Etihad and pointed straight at the Argentine.

“They do want to replace him if he goes, and that's above and beyond the [Ayyoub] Bouaddi deal, which I think will still happen regardless,” he said, making it clear that the 18-year-old from Lille is seen as a separate project, not Rodri’s heir.

City have already thrown serious money at reshaping the squad. Elliot Anderson has arrived from Nottingham Forest for £116million, a statement fee even by Premier League standards. Bouaddi is expected to follow for around £86m, another heavy investment in the next generation.

Yet the real financial earthquake would be Fernandez.

Chelsea are understood to want around £120m to even consider parting with their No.8. Real Madrid have been linked. The price, the profile, the competition – it all points to a transfer of the very top bracket.

And still, the connection to Enzo Maresca keeps City in the thick of it.

The new manager is already putting his own stamp on the champions, and Fernandez is a player he knows, trusts and, crucially, fits. That relationship means the Etihad links are not fading with time; they are hardening as Rodri’s situation develops.

Borson sees a clear “question mark” over Fernandez’s future at Stamford Bridge and wonders if that uncertainty will collide with City’s need.

“There's still a question mark over whether Enzo Fernandez goes, which would be an enormous transaction. Is he the [Rodri] replacement to City?” he said.

It is not just about who arrives. Timing is everything.

Borson expects City to drive a hard deadline on Rodri’s future, with the Community Shield against Arsenal on Sunday, 16 August, looming large in their planning.

“So there's still loads to happen. But it's a question of whether City are prepared to play that game with Rodri. Or whether they just go, 'Look, if you haven't brought the offer by the Charity Shield, we're not selling this summer.'”

That stance would either force suitors to move fast or kick the saga into next year. If the offers do land and Rodri goes, the domino that follows could be Fernandez.

All signs, for now, point towards City preparing for his exit. That is when the focus would turn fully to Chelsea and a player who might be ready for a fresh start after a turbulent spell in London.

Fernandez arrived at Stamford Bridge as a World Cup winner and one of the most expensive midfielders in history. His Chelsea career has been played out against a backdrop of upheaval and constant change. A move to a more stable, title-chasing environment under a coach who knows him would have obvious appeal.

Borson expects both clubs to be active right up until the window closes.

“I think City plan to be pretty busy between now and the close of the window. They want to buy and sell. Chelsea, I still see Chelsea being busy between now and the window closing,” he said.

Chelsea have been accused in some quarters of being “keen to get rid” of Fernandez and viewing him as “a liability”, but the numbers from last season tell a different story about his influence on the pitch. Across 61 games in all competitions, the 25-year-old produced 16 goals and 10 assists – serious output from midfield in a chaotic side.

Drop that level of production into City’s structure, with their control, their patterns, their weight of chances, and it is not hard to see why Maresca would be tempted.

The money would be huge. The risk, too. Replacing Rodri – the man who has defined City’s control of games – with anyone is a gamble.

But this is the market City live in now. If Rodri really is on his way, they will not be shopping in the bargain aisle.

The clock is ticking towards the Community Shield. One way or another, that is when the real shape of City’s midfield – and Enzo Fernandez’s future – will start to come into focus.
