Manchester City Eye Enzo Fernández Amid Midfield Shake-Up

Manchester City are bracing for a seismic reshuffle in midfield – and Enzo Fernández has surged towards the top of their shortlist.

Sources have indicated City are increasingly preparing for life without Rodri, whose future this month is under serious threat. In that scenario, attention is expected to swing firmly towards Fernández, a player new manager Enzo Maresca is understood to admire greatly.

Chelsea, for their part, are not pushing him towards the exit. But they are listening. Reluctantly.

The London club have previously pinned a £120million price tag on the Argentina international and intend to hold that line. That figure is no secret in the market, and it is a number City are currently unwilling to match.

They have already committed around £116m to bring Elliot Anderson into their midfield this summer and are still trying to close a deal for Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi. With that in mind, City are described as “exploring” a move for Fernández rather than driving it, wary of going all-in on another nine-figure signing for a 25-year-old when one major midfield deal is already on the table.

Chelsea, though, see little reason to blink. Unless an offer lands close to their valuation, they are prepared to keep Fernández and build around him.

City’s double dilemma in midfield

The tension in City’s planning lies in the scale of the potential exodus.

Bouaddi remains the priority target for the latter stages of the window. City have been working on that move for months, but despite the long courtship, they are yet to push it into the decisive phase with Lille. Any agreement is expected to come in around the £100m mark – a fee that would normally rule out another huge midfield purchase in the same window.

But normal windows do not usually involve the prospect of losing Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders in one hit.

The possibility of a pair of central midfield departures is reshaping the internal debate. If both players leave, City’s recruitment team would be tasked with finding two high-level replacements, suddenly making a double swoop for Bouaddi and Fernández less fanciful than it first appears.

Rodri’s situation is driving the urgency. Reijnders’ stance is adding another layer of pressure.

Reijnders weighs up his future

As revealed by Football Insider, Reijnders is considering forcing the issue before the 1 September deadline if his role does not look set to grow under Maresca.

On paper, his numbers last season look healthy: 50 appearances in all competitions. Scratch beneath the surface, though, and the picture changes. Only 19 of those outings were Premier League starts. For a 28-year-old in his prime, that is not the platform he wants.

The Dutchman is understood to be increasingly concerned that his game time will not significantly improve in the new campaign. If the signals from Maresca and the club do not convince him otherwise, he is prepared to explore a move away from the Etihad.

Should both Reijnders and Rodri depart, City’s carefully tiered transfer plan turns into a race. Cash would be freed up, but so would two key spots at the heart of Maresca’s system. In that scenario, paying big for both Bouaddi and Fernández suddenly feels less like extravagance and more like necessity.

City have spent the summer trying to evolve from a position of strength. Now, with their midfield spine under threat and Chelsea holding firm over Fernández, that evolution risks turning into a full-scale rebuild.
