Maine Black Bears Hold Providence to 1-1 Draw: A Historic Match

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Maine walked out of Chapey Field on Thursday night with more than a draw. It left with a statement.

Against unbeaten Providence, the Black Bears absorbed pressure, struck on the counter, and held their nerve in a 1-1 battle that felt every bit as tense as the scoreline suggests.

Meadows strikes on the break

The game tilted Maine’s way in the dying moments of the first half. With the clock ticking under a minute, Victoria Dungey – in her 60th career appearance – produced the moment of quality the visitors needed.

She spun away from two Friars in midfield and threaded a perfectly weighted ball straight up the spine of the Providence defense. Isabella Meadows saw it early, burst through the gap, and never broke stride. One touch to carry into the box, another to guide the ball inside the right post with 37 seconds left in the half.

Clinical. Ruthless. Maine led 1-0 at the break, and Meadows had her second goal of the season.

Providence finally breaks through

The Friars had carried much of the attacking load and kept coming after halftime. They finished with a 6-4 edge in shots on target and a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks, forcing Maine to defend for long stretches.

Elena Barenberg answered the call. The Black Bears’ goalkeeper turned away five efforts, reading crosses, cutting out through balls, and buying her back line precious time as the Friars pushed numbers forward.

The pressure finally told in the closing stages. With less than 10 minutes left, Providence thought it had its equalizer ruled out for offsides. After review, the decision flipped. The goal stood, the score leveled at 1-1, and the stadium roared back to life.

Maine, stung by the reversal, had to steady itself quickly. It did.

A rare result with history attached

The draw may read like a single point in September, but the context runs deeper. Maine entered the night 2-11-1 all-time against Providence. The Black Bears had not taken a result off a Big East opponent since a tie with St. John’s back in 2007.

This 1-1 stand changes that. It’s a small crack in a wall that has stood for 17 years.

There were personal milestones layered into the performance as well. Dungey’s assist was her second of the season on the night she hit 60 career games. Defender Luise Reinwald also reached 60 career appearances, while Meghan Bernetti marked her 50th career start and, along with Olivia Grisdale, went the full 90 minutes in a grinding defensive effort.

Maine moves to 2-3-2 on the season. Providence, still unbeaten but with six draws already, sits at 2-0-6.
