Logan Dobbs Shines with First Goal for Gillingham

Gareth Ainsworth says even he didn’t see this coming from Logan Dobbs.

The 19-year-old defender has forced his way into Gillingham’s plans and stayed there, starting every game of the season so far and capping his rise with a landmark moment on Saturday – his first senior goal in a 2-0 win over Tranmere.

Dobbs climbed highest to head home the opener, a goal that did more than settle early nerves. It underlined just how quickly he has gone from squad option to mainstay.

“Logan Dobbs has been a surprise package for me this year,” Ainsworth told BBC Radio Kent, openly admitting the youngster has exceeded expectations.

The opportunity came suddenly. Liam Gordon’s injury in the first game and Sam Gale’s move to Barnsley ripped up Ainsworth’s early plans. The gap in the squad was clear. Dobbs walked straight through it.

“All of a sudden the door opened and Logan's been sensational,” Ainsworth said. “And I think he will understand when I say I didn't know he was capable of – he's done really well to become one of the consistent members of the squad here.”

From there, the story turned from tactical to emotional. As Dobbs wheeled away after his header, the reaction from the stands told its own tale. The home support broke into chants declaring he is “one of our own”, a chorus that carried an extra punch given the moment.

“Songs were sung from the stands saying [Dobbs] is one of our own, so when he got his first goal in front of the fans then that's what dreams are made of,” Ainsworth said.

Gillingham sit 11th in League Two, with the table already starting to stretch, and the tests are only getting tougher. Next up is a home clash on Saturday with second-placed Bristol Rovers, a fixture that will demand resilience, quality and nerve.

On current evidence, Dobbs will be right in the middle of it.
