Liverpool's Summer Transfer Dilemma: The Fate of Curtis Jones

Liverpool’s summer window has been noisy without actually being busy.

Three signings through the door, a new name linked almost every day, and yet the big decisions still hang in the air. Several areas of the squad still need work, but no one at Anfield seems entirely sure what the next decisive move will be.

Names like Ibrahim Mbaye and Bradley Barcola sit high on Liverpool’s wishlist. Paris Saint-Germain’s price tags, though, are miles away from Liverpool’s own valuations, so those ideas remain just that – ideas. No bids, no breakthroughs.

While Liverpool stall, other clubs move. And that could punch a hole straight through Andoni Iraola’s plans.

Inter, Newcastle and a chain reaction

The latest twist comes from Italy and the North East.

According to TEAMtalk, Inter Milan have offered two of their midfielders to Newcastle United – a move that could end up funding a push for Curtis Jones.

Jones is widely viewed as Liverpool’s most likely departure this summer. He is into the final year of his contract at Anfield, with no talks yet over an extension. In that context, a sale feels logical, even if it would bring in less than Liverpool believe he is truly worth.

Right now, that valuation is the key obstacle. Liverpool want more, suitors are wary of overpaying for a player with just a year left. Stalemate.

Inter’s plan could break it.

TEAMtalk report that intermediaries working on Davide Frattesi’s situation have alerted Newcastle to his potential availability. The 26-year-old Italy international has been told he can leave Inter this summer as the Serie A champions look to clear space – and raise funds – to go after Jones, a player they are said to be “determined” to bring to San Siro.

Inter value Frattesi at around €30 million (£26m / $35m). Juventus have shown interest, but Newcastle have now been informed the midfielder is on the market. Frattesi is understood to be open to a move to England and has attracted Premier League attention before.

Newcastle’s conversations with Inter do not stop there. The Magpies have also enquired about highly rated youngster Aleksandar Stankovic as they search for midfield reinforcements following Bruno Guimaraes’ departure, having already missed out on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

If Newcastle bite on Frattesi or Stankovic, Inter get their money. If Inter get their money, their pursuit of Jones suddenly becomes very real. And if that happens, Liverpool’s transfer strategy gets ripped up and rewritten on the fly.

Jones at the heart of a delicate Liverpool puzzle

On paper, Liverpool’s midfield looks crowded. Bodies everywhere, options in every role.

In reality, there are question marks. Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister struggled to convince across last season, leaving the unit feeling far less secure than the numbers suggest.

That is why losing Jones now would cut deep.

Technically sound, tactically flexible and homegrown, Jones fits Iraola’s high-energy, front-foot approach. With the Spaniard admitting his team are short of full fitness, he will lean heavily on his bench in the opening weeks. Jones is exactly the sort of player you want to turn to when the game opens up and legs start to fade.

Yet the relationship is not straightforward. The piece suggests Jones’ trust in the club took a hit after Arne Slot failed to give him regular minutes last term, and that could shape his thinking this summer. If he feels his pathway is blocked, a move to a club like Inter, with a clear role and fresh start, becomes harder to turn down.

For Liverpool, the timing is awful. Lose Jones now and they are not just cashing in on a player in his final year; they are forced back into the market for another midfielder, at a stage of the window when prices rise and options shrink.

So the equation is brutally simple. If Newcastle take Inter’s offer, Inter move for Jones. If Inter land Jones, Liverpool need a new midfielder. And if Liverpool are dragged into that late-window scramble, the entire shape of Iraola’s first season could change in a hurry.
