Liverpool's £100m Pursuit of Yan Diomande Fails as PSG Advances

Liverpool have thrown everything at Yan Diomande. Money, status, a gaping vacancy on the right flank. It still looks like it won’t be enough.

The 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger has been Liverpool’s marquee attacking target since the window opened, identified as the man to step into the space Mohamed Salah’s departure has torn open on the right. The club moved early, moved big, and were flatly rebuffed.

An offer worth €100m – around £85m – has already been turned down by Leipzig. The structure has been debated: some sources put it at €90m plus €10m in add-ons, others at €80m with €20m in bonuses. The detail barely matters now. Leipzig said no, and Diomande’s eyes turned firmly towards Paris.

Once the Ivorian made it clear he wanted PSG, Liverpool’s pursuit looked doomed. Internally, the club began to pivot, accelerating work on an alternative: Bradley Barcola, the France international whose place at the Ligue 1 champions could be squeezed if Diomande walks through the door.

But Diomande remains the one they truly want. So Liverpool have gone back in for one last swing.

Liverpool’s late push meets a closed door

Graeme Bailey, speaking to TEAMtalk, revealed that Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City have all made late approaches for Diomande. Only one of those clubs, though, has already tested Leipzig’s resolve with a nine-figure bid. Only one has built its summer attacking plan around him.

That club is Liverpool. And they are still facing the same answer.

Bailey reports that Diomande’s mind is made up: he wants PSG. No drama, no twist, no suggestion of a late change of heart. The player has chosen Paris.

Any suggestion that PSG themselves might be cooling on the deal has also been shut down. Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the club’s president, has stepped in personally to drive negotiations with Leipzig, taking charge of talks with the Red Bull hierarchy.

That intervention has changed the temperature of the deal. Leipzig, who had stood firm against Liverpool’s €100m offer, are now increasingly resigned to losing their star winger. PSG, European champions and armed with Al-Khelaifi’s relationships at Red Bull, are moving steadily towards an agreement.

Sources close to the negotiations believe the clubs are edging closer to a deal, with Leipzig internally accepting that Diomande is closing in on a move to Paris.

The numbers underline how serious PSG are. They are prepared to pay roughly €110m – around £93.5m – to get this done. Liverpool’s huge bid has effectively set the market, and PSG look ready to go beyond it.

Reds forced back to Plan B

For Liverpool, the picture is becoming brutally clear. Their top target is heading elsewhere, their record offer brushed aside, their late attempt to hijack the move falling short against the pull of Paris and the clout of Al-Khelaifi.

Attention at Anfield will now swing back to Barcola. The 21-year-old finds himself at an impasse with PSG over a new and improved contract, and the French club are open to a sale at the right price.

Barcola is not a consolation prize in terms of talent, but he is undeniably Plan B in terms of Liverpool’s original blueprint for the summer. Diomande was the blockbuster, the statement replacement for Salah on that right side. Barcola would be the response to losing him, not the spark that reshaped the strategy.

Liverpool have money on the table, a system that needs a new right-sided spearhead, and a fanbase expecting a marquee forward. PSG, meanwhile, are preparing to spend nine figures on the very player Liverpool identified to fill that void.

The market has spoken. Now Liverpool must decide how they answer it.
