Liverpool's Winger Hunt Faces Brighton's Standoff
The Premier League is back, the stadiums are full, and yet the real noise still crackles in the background: the final days of the transfer window. With just over a week left, the biggest clubs in England are still scrambling to fix holes, chase dreams and, in some cases, avoid outright panic.
Liverpool’s winger hunt hits resistance
Andoni Iraola has been blunt. Liverpool need wingers. Curtis Jones has gone, a €30m move to Inter Milan confirmed, potentially rising by another €5m in add-ons, with a 10 per cent sell-on clause thrown in. One of Jürgen Klopp’s last great projects has walked out the door in the final year of his contract, and the new head coach wants fresh firepower out wide.
The search has turned into a tug-of-war with Brighton. Liverpool have seen two bids for Yankuba Minteh rejected in as many days, the latest worth £60m after an opening £50m offer. Brighton are standing their ground and showing no sign of blinking.
So Liverpool are widening the net. The Times report that the club have made an enquiry to Real Madrid over Brazil forward Endrick. The 20-year-old spent last season at Lyon and was part of Brazil’s World Cup squad, but with Jose Mourinho now in charge at the Bernabeu, his long‑term role in Madrid’s attack is unclear.
Bradley Barcola remains another name on Liverpool’s list, yet that chase looks even more complicated. Paris Saint‑Germain want £145m for the France international. Liverpool would like two wide forwards; the market is making them pay for that ambition.
Arsenal land Konsa and turn to Yildiz
Across north London, Arsenal have already landed one of their key defensive targets. Ezri Konsa has completed his £51m move from Aston Villa, becoming the Gunners’ fifth signing of the summer and potentially debuting against his former club next week.
Konsa spoke with the kind of conviction Mikel Arteta demands.
“I know he loves defenders who can really defend and defenders who are calm on the ball. His style suits me so I can't wait to get going,” the centre-back said, calling it “a proud moment” to join “one of the best teams in the world” and insisting he is “here to win”.
With that deal done, Arsenal’s gaze has swung back upfield. Arteta has long targeted an upgrade on the left side of his attack. The dream signing was Vinicius Jr, but the Brazilian’s decision to stay at Real Madrid has forced a rethink.
Now Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz has moved high on the list. Arsenal are exploring whether a deal for the 21-year-old Turkey international is possible in this window as they build a squad for a serious tilt at both the Premier League and Champions League.
Junior Kroupi of Bournemouth would likely have been an option this summer had he not suffered an injury. He remains a candidate for January, when the market opens up again and other doors may be easier to push.
There is also a more audacious name in the mix. Reports in France suggest Arsenal could move for Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen if the 27-year-old drops his wage demands. With Kai Havertz, Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Jesus already on the books, it would be a bold reshaping of Arteta’s attack, but the former Napoli forward has been linked with the Premier League for years. His all‑action style would fit the league perfectly.
United finally get their man in midfield
At Old Trafford, Manchester United have chosen the day of their Premier League opener against Hull to push a major deal over the line. The club have an agreement in place to sign Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba for £70m, ending a pursuit that started last summer.
The 20-year-old will undergo a medical this weekend, with Sky Sports reporting a five‑year contract is on the table and a sell‑on clause included for Brighton. For Michael Carrick, preparing for his first league game of the season, the news offers a timely boost in the middle of the pitch.
Tottenham move for Savinho as City eye Allan
Tottenham are also deep in the market for wide players. They have agreed a deal to sign winger Savinho from Manchester City for an initial £75m, with Omar Marmoush tipped as another possible attacking addition.
City, having sanctioned Savinho’s departure, are not standing still. They have identified Brazilian winger Allan as a potential replacement as Enzo Maresca quietly reshapes his inherited squad.
Enzo Fernandez and City: one last twist?
One of the window’s longest-running sagas might not be dead yet. Enzo Fernandez was booed on his return to Stamford Bridge after a turbulent summer that ended with a red card and defeat in the World Cup final. The Chelsea midfielder has previously suggested he would be open to leaving, and his former boss at Leicester, now City manager Enzo Maresca, is a keen admirer.
Chelsea had set a firm deadline of 5pm on Friday 14 August for bids. That moment has passed, and the club expect the Argentine to stay. Xabi Alonso has said Fernandez is “training really well” as he prepares for the new season. Even so, City could still test Chelsea’s resolve with an offer close to the £120m the Blues want, especially if other midfield options slip away.
Villa ready Jackson move as Atletico step back
Aston Villa, preparing for another season under Unai Emery, are lining up a move of their own. Chelsea are braced for a bid for Nicolas Jackson, with Villa considering an offer close to the London club’s £65m valuation.
Jackson, 25, endured a disappointing loan spell at Bayern Munich but impressed at the World Cup with Senegal. Atletico Madrid, who value Julian Alvarez at £150m with Barcelona and Arsenal both interested, look unlikely to join the race for Jackson at that price.
Minteh, Barcola, Alvarez and the final week’s dominoes
As the clock ticks down to the 1 September deadline, the list of possible late‑window blockbusters remains long. Bradley Barcola’s future is in play. Julian Alvarez has major admirers. Clubs across Europe, from Barcelona to Arsenal and beyond, are weighing up one last push.
Liverpool still need at least one winger. Arsenal still want that left‑sided attacker. United have finally landed their midfield target, but others may yet move. The money is there. The gaps in squads are obvious.
The only question now is which club blinks first in this final, frantic week.
