Liverpool's Search for a New Defender Hits Snag

Liverpool’s search for the next leader of their back line is set to hit an early snag. Jan Paul van Hecke, the Brighton and Hove Albion defender admired at Anfield, has his heart set on Tottenham Hotspur.

With Ibrahima Konate leaving and Virgil van Dijk edging into the final phase of his career, Liverpool’s need for a central defender this summer is obvious. Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet are lined up to join Andoni Iraola’s squad, but both are long-term projects rather than instant pillars. Van Hecke, 26, looked like the ideal blend of age, pedigree and Premier League experience.

Liverpool made their move.

According to Dutch outlet VI, the club established contact with Van Hecke, whose Brighton contract runs to 2027, as they explored defensive options. Chelsea and Newcastle United also monitored the Netherlands international after a standout season on the south coast, where he emerged as one of Brighton’s key performers.

For a while, the race looked open. Then Tottenham pressed the accelerator.

Spurs, VI report, have “pushed ahead in recent weeks” and are now preparing a third bid for the centre-back. Personal terms are already agreed, and that has shifted the entire picture. Van Hecke, who played under Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton, is described as having become “enthusiastic” during talks with the Italian, a coach who helped sharpen his game and trust him in high-pressure Premier League football.

That connection appears decisive.

“Van Hecke himself has therefore made up his mind: it has to be Tottenham,” VI state.

Despite noise in the British press about rival interest, the defender is now said to be focused solely on a move to north London. Spurs, sensing their advantage, are working to close the deal quickly so that Van Hecke can head into the World Cup with his future resolved and a major transfer secured.

Inside the Netherlands camp, the push towards Tottenham is gathering its own momentum.

Micky van de Ven, already established at Spurs, has been lobbying his compatriot to join him. “I did talk to Jan Paul briefly about Tottenham. I think it is a good step for him,” the defender said, underlining how attractive the project looks from within Ange Postecoglou’s dressing room.

National team coach Ronald Koeman, meanwhile, struck a pragmatic tone when asked about the proposed move. He admitted he would prefer his players to have “peace of mind” and clarity over their club situation before major tournaments, but accepted he cannot stand in the way of transfers being concluded around the national team schedule.

For Liverpool, this is a reminder of how quickly a carefully laid plan can be outflanked when a player’s preference is clear and a rival club moves with conviction. For Tottenham, it is another sign of growing pull under De Zerbi’s incoming influence and a defensive unit that could soon be built around two Dutch centre-backs who already know exactly what it takes to thrive in England.
