Liverpool Target Ronald Araujo on Loan from Barcelona
Liverpool are closing on a season-long loan deal for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, a move that would bring one of La Liga’s most battle-hardened centre-backs to Anfield at a pivotal moment in their rebuild.
The agreement is set to include an option to buy, giving Liverpool the chance to turn the transfer into a permanent signing after the campaign. Araujo is expected to join up with the squad this weekend, handing the coaching staff an early look at a player who has spent years operating at the sharp end of European football.
At 27, Araujo arrives with a heavyweight résumé. Since joining Barcelona from Uruguayan side Boston River in 2018, he has made more than 200 appearances for the Catalan club, growing from a raw prospect into one of the leaders of the dressing room. He helped Barca win La Liga in three of the past four seasons and finished last term wearing the captain’s armband.
Yet his status on the pitch shifted last season. Despite being under contract until 2031, Araujo made only 11 league starts, as Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi emerged as Barcelona’s preferred central defensive pairing. A player once inked into the team sheet found himself watching too often from the bench.
That changing hierarchy has opened the door for Liverpool. They are moving for a defender still in his prime, with elite-level experience and a point to prove after a frustrating year in Spain. If the deal is finalised, Araujo trades the Camp Nou for Anfield and a fresh fight for a starting place—this time in the heart of the Premier League.
