Liverpool Reject Bayern's Interest in Rio Ngumoha

Liverpool have drawn a thick red line through Bayern Munich’s interest in Rio Ngumoha – and they are not leaving room for negotiation, interpretation or opportunism.

The 17-year-old winger, fresh from a breakout 2025/26 campaign, has been heavily linked with a move to Bavaria after reports that Bayern were preparing a major bid. David Ornstein’s revelation that the Bundesliga champions were lining up a “massive move” for the teenager set off a storm around Anfield last week.

Inside Liverpool, that storm turned quickly into fury.

Anfield anger at Bayern noise

Ngumoha’s numbers last season were modest on paper – three goal contributions from just 551 Premier League minutes – but the impact was anything but. Those minutes cameos, those flashes of pace and daring, have convinced Liverpool that they are looking at a long-term cornerstone of their attack.

Which is why the suggestion they could be prised open so early has gone down terribly.

TEAMtalk reported that Liverpool were “deeply unhappy” at claims Bayern had already agreed terms with Ngumoha and his camp. Around the club, the reaction has been described as “outrage” at suggestions of any under-the-radar move or pre-emptive agreement.

The message from Anfield has been blunt: they have no intention of selling. Not this summer. Not under any circumstances.

Speaking to the BBC, journalist Lewis Bower relayed the stance from a trusted insider in academy circles.

“I do have a particularly well-placed person in academy football at a consultation, somebody who works in sports consultation,” he said. “I believe he said to me it’s from the best possible source, so take from that what you will. I’d never tweet anything that I didn’t believe to be true, but yeah, it stands by absolutely no chance of that happening.”

No chance. That is the tone Liverpool want out there.

Bayern admiration meets a brick wall

No one at Liverpool is naïve about the scale of Bayern’s pull or the admiration the German club hold for Ngumoha. Vincent Kompany is understood to be a big fan of the winger’s talent, and Bayern’s scouting network has followed his rise closely since his move from Chelsea in 2024.

But admiration is one thing. Access is another.

Inside Anfield, there is confidence that Bayern will not cross the line into an illegal approach. The club believe the Germans will stay within transfer regulations and avoid any direct, unapproved contact with the player or his representatives.

Even if they did test the water, Liverpool’s position has been nailed down. As transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey reported, sources at the club insist there has “never been any doubt” over Ngumoha’s long-term future on Merseyside.

The teenager is regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in the squad, and the hierarchy are not entertaining any scenario that ends with him leaving.

Contract already lined up for next phase

Ngumoha only signed his current deal last September, extending his stay to 2028 after his switch from Chelsea. At the time, that three-year contract was the maximum Liverpool could offer under regulations for 17-year-olds.

Inside the club, though, that agreement was always seen as a starting point, not a final destination.

The winger turns 18 on 29 August, and Liverpool have already mapped out the next step. Once he reaches that birthday, they plan to open talks over a new, longer-term contract, complete with a significant wage rise that reflects both his performances and his elevated status in the squad.

The club’s focus, as Bailey put it, is “entirely on securing the 17-year-old’s long-term future rather than discussing any exit”. The next stage of his development is being planned now, with more first-team minutes expected this season and a pathway laid out after his senior England debut and progress with the Under-19s.

The stance is clear. Bayern can admire from afar. Liverpool, though, intend that the next big decision in Rio Ngumoha’s career will not be which country he plays in, but how far he can drive the future of their attack from Anfield.
