Liberty Secures 1-0 Win Over JMU with Halle Engle's Late Goal

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty needed one moment. Halle Engle supplied it.

With the clock ticking into the 82nd minute and a third straight draw with James Madison looming, Engle slipped behind the Dukes’ back line, met a perfectly weighted pass from Margaret Garner and nudged the ball past a charging goalkeeper for a 1-0 Liberty win at Osborne Stadium on Thursday night.

The flag stayed down. JMU didn’t.

The Dukes immediately surrounded the referee, arms raised, demanding offside. The challenge went to video review, tension freezing the stadium for a few long seconds. The verdict: goal stands. Liberty led, and the game’s lone clear breakthrough belonged to Engle.

It was her third goal of the season and the 11th game-winner of her Liberty career.

Leja slams the door

From there, the Lady Flames closed ranks. JMU managed just one shot in the final eight minutes as Liberty calmly bled the clock and leaned on a back line already stretched by absence.

Starting center back Lauren Littleton was unavailable, forcing a reshuffle that handed Dani Gubbels the first start of her career. The Dukes tested that new-look defense early and often, especially in a bruising first half.

By the break, JMU held a 7-5 edge in shots, and both sides had forced three saves. Liberty’s answer stood in goal.

Ainsley Leja turned in a season-high six saves, reading crosses, smothering low drives and refusing to give JMU a way through. She finished with her third full 90-minute shutout of the season and the 24th of her career, pushing her season numbers to a 0.80 goals-against average and a .806 save percentage.

Five Liberty players went the full 90 as the Lady Flames absorbed JMU’s physical approach and still found the legs to strike late.

Breaking a pattern

The matchup had fallen into a familiar script in recent years. The last two meetings ended level, and the one before that needed overtime in 2019 for Liberty to edge JMU. For 80 minutes on Thursday, it looked like more of the same.

Then Garner saw a gap.

Trailing Engle’s run along the Dukes’ back line, she slipped a pass into space. Engle accelerated, reached it first and slid home the decisive finish just ahead of the onrushing keeper. One clean move shattered the stalemate and flipped a tense, grinding night into a statement home win.

The result keeps Liberty perfect at Osborne Stadium this season at 4-0 and nudges the program’s all-time record against JMU to 4-8-2. The Lady Flames are now 3-2-2 in their last seven meetings with the Dukes.

Engle’s strike also nudged her to the top of the team scoring chart with three goals. Garner and Avenly Monteith sit right behind her on six total points each, both with two goals and two assists.

It was Liberty’s fifth shutout of the season and its second 1-0 victory, joining a narrow win over VCU.

Senior day on deck

Liberty, now 6-2-1, closes its non-conference slate on Sunday afternoon at home against Old Dominion (2-4). The Lady Flames will honor 11 members of their 2026 Senior Class in a pregame ceremony before a 1 p.m. kickoff at Osborne Stadium.

They’ll walk out on a perfect home record, a defense that just survived a physical test without its anchor, and a forward in Engle who keeps writing late-game endings.

The question now: how long can this home fortress hold?
