Leeds United vs Crystal Palace: Early Season Showdown

Elland Road wakes up early on Sunday with two very different stories colliding.

On one side, Leeds United are unbeaten in the Premier League, purring under Daniel Farke and fresh from a 4-1 demolition of Newcastle United on Sept. 14. On the other, Crystal Palace arrive wounded in the league, stuck in 17th, yet buoyed by a thumping 4-0 win over Lech Poznań in the UEFA Europa League.

Same pitch. Very different pressures.

Leeds riding the league wave

Leeds sit sixth after four games, with two wins, two draws and not a single league defeat. The numbers are modest, the mood is not. That Newcastle result felt like a statement: intensity, goals, and a side beginning to trust its own ambition.

The Carabao Cup exit to Chelsea — a 6-3 defeat in the third round — told a different story. Defensive frailties were exposed, and Farke will know that the Premier League will punish any repeat. Still, the league table is a far kinder read than that cup scoreline, and Elland Road will be in no mood for doubt.

Leeds are not at full strength. Harry Wilson is out with a thigh injury, Joe Rodon is sidelined by a hamstring problem, and Mateo Joseph is missing with a knee issue. The absences force tweaks, not a rethink.

Farke is expected to stick with a back three and aggressive wing-backs, with James Trafford likely to start in goal. In front of him, a defensive trio of James Justin, Nico Elvedi and Dal Varesanovic Muharemovic offers balance: Justin’s mobility, Elvedi’s calm, Muharemovic’s physical edge.

Out wide, Jayden Bogle and Gudmundur Gudmundsson are set to provide the width, asked to sprint both ways and pin Palace back. In central midfield, the combination of Anton Stach, Ethan Ampadu and Ao Tanaka should give Leeds control and bite, with Ampadu again the anchor around which everything spins.

Up front, the responsibility is clear. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Noah Okafor are expected to lead the line, one a traditional target with penalty-box instincts, the other offering movement and sharp runs into channels. Leeds have goals in them; Sunday is about proving they can deliver them consistently.

Palace walking a tightrope

Crystal Palace’s season already feels like a balancing act.

In Europe, they started with a flourish, hammering Lech Poznań 4-0 on Matchday 1 of the 2026-27 Europa League. Confidence, swagger, goals. Domestically, it is a different picture: one win, three defeats, and a 3-2 loss to Ipswich Town on Sept. 12 that left them hovering just above the relegation zone.

Seventeenth after four games is not yet a crisis, but it is a warning. This trip to Elland Road is about more than three points. Palace need to climb out of the early-season gloom and carry some of that European momentum back into the league. Morale, not just mathematics, is on the line.

They travel with problems of their own. Axel Disasi is suspended. Dean Henderson is out with an ankle injury, Chadi Riad is sidelined by a knee issue, and Jean-Philippe Mateta is missing with a hamstring injury. The spine of the squad has been hit.

Even so, the likely XI has a clear identity. Henderson’s absence opens the door for another option in goal, but the projected lineup still lists him as the starting keeper, a reminder of just how central he is when fit.

In front of the goalkeeper, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Chris Richards and Ahanor are expected to form a back three — a mix of composure and aggression that will be tested by Leeds’ movement. Out wide and in midfield, Khalaili, Jurriën Timber, Adam Wharton and Tyrick Mitchell should carry the workload, trying to disrupt Leeds’ rhythm and spring counters.

The front line has pace and threat. Ismaïla Sarr, Yeremy Pino and Jørgen Strand Larsen give Palace different angles of attack: Sarr’s direct running, Pino’s craft between the lines, Strand Larsen’s presence through the middle. If Palace can get them into space, Elland Road will feel the tension.
