Leeds United Agree Deal for Elvedi – One Big Obstacle Remains

Leeds United have their next defensive leader lined up. On paper, at least.

The club have agreed a deal with Borussia Monchengladbach for centre-back Nico Elvedi, a player Daniel Farke knows inside out, in a move worth around €10m (£8.5m) plus a 15% sell-on clause to the Bundesliga side. Personal terms with the Swiss international were tied up earlier in the week. Everything looks ready.

It still isn’t done.

The transfer hinges on what happens with Sebastiaan Bornauw. Until his future is resolved, Elvedi remains in limbo.

Bornauw domino holds up Elvedi

Bornauw has been strongly linked with a switch to Hamburg after a frustrating spell at Elland Road. Since arriving from Wolfsburg, the Belgian has managed just nine Premier League appearances, never truly establishing himself in Farke’s plans.

Leeds view Elvedi as a direct replacement. No Bornauw exit, no Elvedi arrival. As it stands, there is no agreement in place for the Belgian to leave, leaving Leeds’ carefully laid plans delicately poised a week out from the new season.

The uncertainty has already had consequences in Germany. Elvedi was left out of Borussia Monchengladbach’s squad for their pre-season friendly against Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon, with the club taking no risks on an unnecessary injury that could wreck the move.

The message is clear: everyone is ready to go. They just need the final trigger.

Farke turns to a trusted lieutenant

This is not a blind punt from Leeds. It is targeted, calculated, and rooted in familiarity.

Before arriving at Elland Road in 2023, Farke spent a season in charge at Gladbach. During that spell, he worked closely with Elvedi and quickly came to rely on him. The defender became a cornerstone of his back line, a player Farke publicly rated among the elite.

“The Swiss international quickly became a key player for the boss,” is no empty line. Farke once described him as “one of the best defenders in Europe” at his peak and called him “an absolute leader for us.” Those words carry weight when a manager later tries to build a new defence around the same figure.

Leeds have already reshaped parts of the squad this summer. Harry Wilson, Tarik Muharemovic, and James Trafford have all come through the door as the club look to strengthen their Premier League footing. The departure of Pascal Struijk, though, left a clear gap at centre-back that needed addressing.

Elvedi is the man Farke wants to fill it.

Thin at the back as season looms

While the board work through the Bornauw situation, Farke is left juggling limited options at the heart of his defence.

With Bornauw’s future unresolved and Elvedi still in Germany, Leeds’ specialist centre-backs are down to Joe Rodon, new signing Muharemovic, and Jaka Bijol. Ethan Ampadu and James Justin can both slot in if required, but neither is a long-term, first-choice solution in that role.

It is hardly the ideal backdrop with the new campaign just a week away.

Leeds have their deal. Gladbach have their fee. Elvedi has his terms. All eyes now turn to Bornauw – and whether his next move unlocks the transfer that could define Farke’s back line this season.
