Kim Min-jae Declines Manchester United Move, Stays at Bayern

Manchester United’s long-running admiration for Kim Min-jae is set to remain just that – admiration from a distance.

The Bayern Munich defender, who has been on United’s radar since his title-winning days at Napoli, has made it clear he intends to stay in Bavaria and fight for his place, according to BILD’s Christian Falk.

United’s defensive planning hits a wall

United are gearing up for a busy final fortnight of the summer window. At least two signings are expected: a third midfielder to complete the overhaul in the middle of the pitch and a left-back to challenge – and eventually succeed – Luke Shaw.

A striker is also on the agenda. Any move there depends on shifting Joshua Zirkzee, with a new centre-forward viewed as back-up and competition for Benjamin Sesko.

Beyond that short-term work lies a bigger structural question. Harry Maguire is 33, and United know they must map out his succession at centre-back. Kim has been a recurring name on those lists.

United’s interest first sharpened when the South Korea international dominated Serie A with Napoli, anchoring a defence that delivered the club’s first league title since the Diego Maradona era more than three decades earlier. Bayern moved quickest, striking a deal in the summer of 2023 worth up to €58m with add-ons.

Bayern role keeps United hopes flickering – but only just

Kim’s time in Munich has not been straightforward. He has not always been a guaranteed starter, a situation that has encouraged United to keep watching his situation closely.

Falk confirms that nothing has changed on that front from Old Trafford’s side: Kim remains on United’s list and the club continue to monitor his role under Vincent Kompany.

The defender’s stance, though, is decisive.

Despite spells out of the starting XI, Kim is “very clear” that he wants to stay at Bayern and compete for his spot. He is content with his current role, convinced he can force his way back into the first team with strong performances and ready to step in if injuries open the door.

There will be no move to United this summer. With Kim turning 30 in November, the window for a future switch to Old Trafford looks increasingly narrow too.

Bayern’s quiet victory

For Bayern, his decision is a significant boost. Kompany cannot realistically lean on only two senior centre-backs across a full campaign that includes the Bundesliga, domestic cups and a deep Champions League push.

Kim gives Bayern exactly what elite squads crave: an experienced, high-level defender willing to compete, rotate and be ready when it matters most. As Falk notes, having a player of his calibre available is “critical” if Bayern are to go far in all competitions.

United, meanwhile, must look elsewhere for Maguire’s eventual heir. The question now is not whether they rate Kim Min-jae – that much is obvious – but who becomes the next name at the top of their defensive shortlist as the clock ticks down on the window.
