Killian Phillips Receives International Call-Up for Ireland

Killian Phillips has been handed a late chance to impress on the international stage after earning a call-up to the Republic of Ireland squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League campaign.

The St Mirren midfielder steps in after a bruising weekend for Heimir Hallgrimsson, who has lost Jamie McGrath and Harvey Vale to injury on the eve of the international window.

Both McGrath, of Hibernian, and Queens Park Rangers’ Vale broke down in the warm-up before club fixtures on Saturday, McGrath ahead of Hibs’ clash with Aberdeen and Vale before QPR’s meeting with Preston North End. Any faint hope of their recovery disappeared this morning when Ireland confirmed the pair would miss the entire window.

That opened the door for Phillips. The 22-year-old will report to camp in Dublin today, linking up with the squad before they fly to Pristina for Thursday’s Nations League opener against Kosovo.

Ireland then head to Debrecen in Hungary to face Israel, before returning to home soil for a meeting with Austria at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The window wraps up with a second game against Israel, this time in Bačka Topola, Serbia, rounding off a demanding schedule across four different countries.

Hallgrimsson’s updated squad still carries a strong Premier League and Championship flavour, with Caoimhin Kelleher, Max O'Leary and Gavin Bazunu named as the goalkeeping trio.

At the back, James Abankwah, Joel Bagan, Jimmy Dunne, John Egan, Liam Kitching, Ryan Manning, Jake O'Brien, Dara O'Shea and Liam Scales offer a mix of experience and emerging options.
