Kaizer Chiefs Lead in Maxwele Transfer Battle – Madlala's Decision Looms

The transfer window hasn’t even opened yet, but the first major battle between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is already crackling in the background. At the centre of it all: 25-year-old Golden Arrows midfielder Lungelo Maxwele, a player whose rise over the past season has turned him into one of the most coveted engines in South African football.

According to prominent Kaizer Chiefs insider Innocent Mkhize, Amakhosi have moved early and decisively. Personal terms with Maxwele are understood to be agreed, a clear statement of intent from a club desperate to inject energy and bite into a midfield that has too often looked flat.

For Chiefs, that’s a significant breakthrough. But it’s not a done deal.

The real decision now sits in the Golden Arrows boardroom, and specifically with chairlady Mato Madlala. Mkhize indicates that while Chiefs have convinced the player, Madlala would prefer to see Maxwele in black and white rather than gold and black, favouring a move to Orlando Pirates over a switch to Naturena.

So the stage is set. Chiefs with the player on side. Pirates with the chairlady’s preference. Arrows holding the registration. And the transfer window only officially opening on 1 July.

This is the kind of tug-of-war South African football thrives on.

Chiefs strike first, Pirates wait in the wings

From a purely sporting perspective, Chiefs’ move makes perfect sense. They have lacked a consistent, high-energy presence between the lines, someone who can press, carry the ball and still threaten the box. Maxwele ticks those boxes.

Yet Madlala’s stance introduces a familiar twist. Arrows have long been seen as a club that negotiates hard and chooses destinations carefully. If she leans towards Pirates, it immediately shifts the dynamics of the deal. Chiefs may have done the groundwork with the player, but they still need Arrows to sign off.

That friction between what the player wants, what Chiefs have put on the table, and what Arrows would like to see happen is what turns a routine transfer into a genuine saga.

Why Maxwele suddenly matters this much

Maxwele’s rise has not been explosive, but it has been relentless.

After Royal AM’s expulsion from the Premier Soccer League in 2025, he arrived at Golden Arrows as a free agent, more survivor than star. One season later, he has become one of the most talked-about midfielders in the league.

He featured regularly in the league, clocking 23 appearances, and also played his part in cup competitions. Across all fronts, he produced three goals and one assist – numbers that don’t scream headline act, but hint at a player who affects games in more ways than the stat sheet suggests.

Coaches value him for something different: the way he runs, presses, and drags his team up the pitch.

Relentless work rate. Aggressive pressing. A willingness to drive through midfield with the ball at his feet. Those are the traits that have made him so attractive to both Soweto giants. He can operate centrally, but he’s just as comfortable drifting into wider attacking areas, stretching defences and creating lanes for teammates.

In a league where intensity and transition play have become non-negotiable at the top level, Maxwele offers exactly the kind of dynamism big clubs now build around.

A deal balanced on one decision

Right now, the picture is clear but fragile.

On one side, Kaizer Chiefs have effectively won the personal race. They have convinced Maxwele of their project and their need for him. On the other, Golden Arrows and Madlala still control the final say, and her preference reportedly leans towards Orlando Pirates.

That tension is what will define the coming weeks as the window gathers pace.

If Arrows stand firm and push for Pirates, Chiefs will be forced either to improve their offer, change the structure of the deal, or risk watching a player they’ve already persuaded slip through their fingers and walk straight into the arms of their greatest rivals.

If Madlala softens and allows the player’s wishes and personal terms to carry more weight, Chiefs could land a key piece of their rebuild before the market fully erupts.

Either way, the question hangs over the new season: will Maxwele be driving through midfield at FNB Stadium, or orchestrating the press in Pirates colours at Orlando Stadium?
