Juventus Secure Guglielmo Vicario Loan from Tottenham as Emiliano Martinez Pursuit Ends
Juventus Finalize Deal for Guglielmo Vicario
Juventus have completed an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur to acquire goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario on loan, including an option to buy. This move follows the club's decision to stop chasing Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa.
Switching Focus from Martinez to Vicario
The Turin-based club shifted their attention away from Martinez after Aston Villa stuck to a €15 million (£12.8 million) asking price, which Juventus found too steep. Instead, they swiftly moved to secure Vicario, who will return to Serie A on an initial loan deal.
According to reports, the full agreement with Tottenham was reached recently, marking a homecoming for the Italian goalkeeper who left Italy in 2023.
Loan Terms and Financial Details
Tuttosport reveals that the deal is structured as a loan with a non-binding purchase option set at €10.5 million (£9 million). This setup lets Juventus assess Vicario's performance during the season before deciding on a permanent transfer, offering a more budget-friendly option compared to previous targets.
Changes for Tottenham
For Tottenham, Vicario's exit reflects a shift under manager Roberto De Zerbi, who has made Antonin Kinsky his preferred first-choice keeper. Vicario’s time in London was mixed, featuring some errors and a loss of his starting spot after hernia surgery in March.
Impact on Juventus Goalkeeping Roster
Vicario’s arrival at one of Italy’s top clubs follows a three-year spell in England, where he came to Spurs from Empoli for around €20 million and was expected to replace Hugo Lloris.
This signing disrupts Juventus’ current goalkeeping setup. With Vicario expected to be the starter, Michele Di Gregorio’s future is unclear. Reports indicate he has been offered on loan to clubs like Marseille and others across Europe.
Fitting into Spalletti’s Plans
Coach Luciano Spalletti wanted a goalkeeper comfortable with playing from the back—a skill Vicario showed during his early Tottenham days. Although his form dropped later on, Juventus staff hope returning to Serie A’s tactical demands will help him regain his best form.
This transfer is part of Juventus’ wider summer changes. After signing Jhon Lucumi from Bologna, adding Vicario strengthens a defense undergoing significant updates as he prepares to fit into Spalletti’s system.
