Jurrien Timber will sit out Arsenal’s Carabao Cup tie against Ipswich on Tuesday night, with the decision described as a precaution as the club manage his return from long-term injury.

The Netherlands defender made his first appearance of the season in the Premier League win over Sunderland on Saturday, coming off the bench to replace Ben White, who went off in the first half with a muscular problem. Timber’s cameo marked an important step in his recovery from a lengthy groin issue that has kept him out for months.

Arsenal, though, are not ready to push him straight into another game. Despite being back to fitness, Timber is expected to be left out of the squad for the Ipswich clash. The move is not understood to be related to any setback with his groin; instead, the club want to reintroduce him gradually and avoid overloading him so soon after a long lay-off.

The caution will not be limited to Timber. Mikel Arteta is also poised to rest other senior players for the tie, rotating his squad as the fixtures begin to stack up.
