Julian Alvarez's Transfer Dilemma: Arsenal or Barcelona?

Julian Alvarez has effectively drawn a line in the sand at Atletico Madrid – and it’s left Arsenal, not Barcelona, holding the only realistic escape route.

The Argentina forward has not reported for training for two straight days after being told privately that Atletico will not sell him to Barca. Club sources have confirmed to BBC Sport that senior figures at the Spanish side informed Alvarez and his camp earlier this week that negotiations with the Catalan club are off the table.

Alvarez, 26, has since stayed away from training, officially citing illness. The timing is impossible to ignore. His wish is clear: he wants Barcelona. His path there is blocked.

Atletico have not tried to hide their position. They have gone public twice in 24 hours, issuing firm statements that Alvarez will not be allowed to join Barca in the coming days. On Wednesday, they hit back at comments from Barcelona president Joan Laporta, who insisted the club still wanted the striker, with a blunt response: “There is 0% chance of selling him to Barca.”

The board then reinforced that stance on Thursday, releasing another statement confirming that Atletico de Madrid’s directors had “unanimously expressed their absolute support” for the decision not to negotiate with Barcelona over Alvarez.

And yet, this is not a simple case of a player being declared untouchable.

Atletico are prepared to sell – just not to the club Alvarez wants. They are open to doing business with Arsenal and have already held direct talks with the Premier League champions over what would rank as one of the headline transfers of the summer.

Atleti director Mateu Alemany travelled to London last week and met Arsenal officials. During those discussions, he made it clear Atletico would demand 150m euros (£128m) for the forward. It is a huge fee, but not one that has scared Arsenal off.

Mikel Arteta is pushing hard to land Alvarez this month. Arsenal see him as a statement signing, a forward who can elevate a title-winning squad. Yet the move has stalled on one key point: Alvarez’s insistence on joining Barcelona.

Even so, the door to north London remains wide open. Conversations between Atletico and Arsenal over a club-to-club agreement have been described as positive, and there is a sense that the framework of a deal is already in place.

The next move belongs to Alvarez.

If he gives Arsenal the green light in the coming days, those close to the talks expect the transfer to accelerate quickly. Atletico are ready, Arsenal are ready. Barcelona are shut out.

For a striker who has stopped turning up to work, the question now is simple: cling to a blocked dream in Catalonia, or walk through the only exit Atletico have left ajar and start again in London?
