Jordan Henderson Set for Chelsea Debut Against Brentford

Jordan Henderson is on the brink of a Chelsea debut that drips with irony.

If all goes to plan, his first competitive minutes in blue will come on Friday night at Brentford, the club he left only a few months ago after shaking hands on a gentlemen’s agreement to terminate his deal at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Surgery followed. So did six missed games to start the new season. Alonso had his experienced lieutenant on the books, but not on the pitch.

That wait looks almost over.

Chelsea’s latest batch of training-ground images from Cobham show Henderson back in the thick of it, taking part and looking increasingly sharp. Alonso admitted last week he was optimistic the England international would be fit enough to play some part against Brentford on Friday.

Supporters are desperate for that to happen.

Recent outings have seen a makeshift midfield pairing of Reece James and Romeo Lavia come under scrutiny, with fans unconvinced by the balance and control on offer. The clamour for change has grown louder with each stuttering performance.

So when football.london asked the Chelsea – football.london WhatsApp Channel whether Henderson should start against Brentford, the response was overwhelming. More than 3,800 fans voted “yes”. Just 321 said “no”. Another 190 sat on the fence.

The message could hardly be clearer. Chelsea’s fanbase wants Henderson in the XI, dictating from the centre of the pitch, back at the ground he used to call home.

Now it’s over to Alonso. Does he throw his veteran straight into the fire at his old stomping ground, or hold him back a little longer in a season that already feels like it could swing either way?
