Joe Gomez Returns for Liverpool in Carabao Cup Clash Against Tottenham

Joe Gomez is set to step back into the Liverpool spotlight tonight, with the defender cleared to return from injury for the Carabao Cup clash against Tottenham at Anfield.

The England international has not played a competitive minute this season after suffering a muscle strain in pre-season, but Andoni Iraola confirmed the 27-year-old is finally ready to be involved in the third-round tie.

“Joe is training with the team and is available for tomorrow. It's a matter of deciding how much he can play,” the Liverpool manager said on Monday, leaving the door open to anything from a cautious cameo to a full start.

Gomez’s availability is just one part of what promises to be a heavily-rotated Liverpool side. Iraola has already signposted changes, hinting that the Cup will open the stage for some of the squad’s lesser-seen faces.

“We will see tomorrow players we haven't seen,” he teased, a clear signal that this is the night for fringe players and youngsters to stake a claim.

That message will be music to the ears of Wataru Endo. The Japan international has been confined to the bench so far this season, an unused substitute waiting for his chance. A reshuffled midfield and the demands of a busy schedule could finally hand him the minutes he has been chasing.

The pathway looks even clearer for Rio Ngumoha. The highly-rated youngster came off the bench in the second half against Fulham and impressed with his energy and fearlessness. With Iraola prepared to trust youth, Ngumoha is a strong candidate to step into the starting XI.
