Joao Cancelo's Transfer Saga: Barcelona Deal on the Horizon

Joao Cancelo’s future has taken another sharp turn, and this one perfectly sums up the modern transfer market: a player can be wearing one club’s number while seemingly walking towards another’s dressing room.

At Al-Hilal, Cancelo has been handed the No.20 shirt for the 2026/27 season, the same number he wore in his first spell with the Saudi side and the one he carries with the Portugal national team. On paper, it looks like a commitment. In reality, it feels more like a placeholder.

Barcelona deal all but done – on paper

Barcelona are still pushing to bring the 32-year-old back to Catalonia on a permanent basis, with the fee hovering around €10 million. The agreement between Barça and Al-Hilal is described as practically complete, and Cancelo has long since shaken hands on personal terms with the Spanish club.

That understanding has been in place since the end of last season. Under Hansi Flick, Cancelo was not a luxury; he was a solution. Across 23 appearances, he scored twice, added three assists and, more importantly, nailed down a starting spot at a time when Alejandro Balde battled muscular problems.

Flick saw enough. The German coach made it clear inside the club that Cancelo was worth bringing back, not as a stop-gap but as a piece of the structure. A full-back who can operate on either flank, slip into midfield, and handle the ball under pressure fits neatly into Flick’s blueprint.

Yet the deal still isn’t official. The football is straightforward; the numbers are not.

A simple transfer turned saga

What should have been a routine operation has dragged. Fiscal and financial details have slowed the process, turning a near-agreed move into another long-running Barça saga.

Inside the club, the stance remains firm. Sporting director Deco is intent on closing the transfer, while Flick continues to view Cancelo as an important addition to his squad. The football department is aligned; the bureaucracy is lagging.

While Barcelona wait to announce, Al-Hilal are quietly hedging their bets.

Al-Hilal brace for life without Cancelo

The Saudi club have already moved in the market, signing Mohammed Mahzari, who operates in the same position as Cancelo. That signing is no coincidence. It reads like preparation for an exit rather than competition for the Portuguese defender.

Al-Hilal’s priority now is clear: protect their investment. They want around €10 million from Barcelona, a figure the Catalans are prepared to meet for a player they know inside out.

From their perspective, Cancelo is a known quantity. He understands the Barcelona environment, has already worked under Flick, and offers cover on both sides of the defence. For a club that has repeatedly stumbled with expensive experiments, there is comfort in familiarity.

Training in Saudi, mind in Catalonia

For all the movement behind the scenes, the official line is blunt: Cancelo is still an Al-Hilal player.

He returned to training with the Saudi club on August 7 after his post-World Cup holiday, back in the rhythm of sessions, drills and tactical work while his future hangs in the balance. He wears No.20 in Riyadh, but his name continues to circle around the Camp Nou.

The situation is now stripped down to its essentials. Barcelona know what they want. Al-Hilal know what they want. Cancelo knows where he wants to play.

Only the paperwork stands between a squad list in Saudi Arabia and a permanent place in Flick’s plans in Catalonia.
