Joan Garcia Takes Barcelona's No 1 Shirt as New Era Begins

Barcelona have made it official. Joan Garcia is now their No 1 – in number and in status.

The 25-year-old Spaniard has been formally registered with La Liga and will start the new season wearing the shirt that, for years, belonged to Marc-André ter Stegen. On paper it’s an administrative step. In reality, it’s a clear statement about who the club see as the man to guard their goal in the coming campaign.

This time, there was no late scramble. According to Catalan newspaper Sport, Barcelona pushed Garcia’s registration through early, a stark contrast to last season’s chaotic rush before the opening-day trip to Real Mallorca. Back then, paperwork was completed in the final moments, and Garcia was thrown straight into his first official appearance for the club.

That chance only arrived because of Ter Stegen’s lower back injury, which met La Liga’s criteria for a long-term absence and opened a temporary door. Garcia walked through it. Now, he’s being handed the keys.

Ter Stegen’s loan move to Ajax has left a symbolic void as much as a practical one. The German had worn the No 1 for years, defining an era of Barcelona goalkeeping with his blend of risk-taking and reliability. Garcia now inherits that number, and with it the weight of expectation that comes in a club where goalkeepers are judged on far more than shot-stopping.

This isn’t just a shirt swap. It’s trust, codified in ink and stitching.

There is movement behind him too. Wojciech Szczesny, who arrived at the club wearing 25, slides into the No 13 jersey Garcia vacates. It’s a familiar number for a back-up goalkeeper, but in Barcelona’s current context it feels more like part of a wider reset. The hierarchy is being redrawn, the roles clarified, and the dressing room is being told exactly where everyone stands.

All of it comes with the clock already ticking. Barcelona open their La Liga season away to Elche at the Martínez Valero on Sunday 23 August, and Garcia’s registration lands 12 days before that trip. The build-up is anything but normal. Ten members of the squad are still away on World Cup semi-final duty, leaving pre-season preparations looking disjointed and incomplete.

In that kind of landscape, certainty matters. Naming a definitive No 1 now gives the coaching staff a fixed point to build around, a spine to start from while the rest of the squad filters back in.

The next step will be to lock in the rest of the squad numbers. Barcelona are expected to confirm the full list for the new campaign, covering their summer arrivals and returning loanees. Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and Jessie Bisio will all discover the numbers they carry into their first season in Barcelona colours, while players such as Hector Fort, back from loan, will also be slotted into the new structure.

For Garcia, though, the message is already loud enough. The No 1 shirt is his now. What he does with it will help shape what kind of Barcelona the rest of Spain sees this season.
