Jhon Lucumí: Juventus Transfer Drama Unfolds
As August ticks toward its sharp end and the summer mercato tightens, Juventus find themselves exactly where they so often are in mid-window drama: close, but not quite there.
This time, the name at the heart of it is Jhon Lucumí.
Lucumí says yes — on one condition
Juventus and the Bologna centre-back have an agreement in place on personal terms, according to Tuttosport. The Colombian has accepted the outline of a five-year contract worth €2.5 million per season, with a further €1 million available in bonuses. For a player on Bologna wages, that’s a serious upgrade.
It also underlines something else: Lucumí has nailed his colours to the Juventus mast.
Reports in Italy suggest he has already turned down richer proposals to keep the path to Turin clear. Galatasaray came calling. Besiktas did too, with the added pull of Vincenzo Italiano, his former coach at Bologna, now in charge there. The answer was the same: no.
Inter had looked at him. A few Premier League clubs kicked the tyres. Those trails have gone cold. The player is waiting, and he’s waiting for one club only.
He wants Juventus.
Bologna hold their line
There is, of course, another party in this negotiation, and Bologna are not behaving like a selling club in a hurry.
Lucumí’s €28 million buyout clause expired in mid-July, removing the one clear shortcut to a deal. Since then, Bologna have reportedly set their price at around €25 million. That’s still a hefty fee for a defender who, while highly rated, is not arriving with superstar billing.
From Bologna’s perspective, the stance makes sense. Lucumí has been one of the most reliable centre-backs in Serie A, and they know Juventus are actively searching for defensive upgrades after a sixth-place finish that stung the club’s pride. If the Bianconeri want to fix their back line, they may have to pay for the privilege.
Juventus stuck in the familiar squeeze
The problem for Juventus is not desire. It’s timing and balance.
The club are understood to be in a position where another defender can only arrive if one leaves. Names such as Federico Gatti, Lloyd Kelly and Juan Cabal sit on the list of potential departures, but nothing concrete has dropped yet. Until a sale is made and room is cleared — both in the squad and on the wage bill — Lucumí’s move remains theory rather than reality.
So the situation hangs in a kind of transfer limbo.
On one side, a player who has effectively chosen Juventus over more lucrative offers and a broader market. On the other, a club that has agreed terms with him but still has to unlock the deal with Bologna and tidy its own house first.
A waiting game with a clear direction
Strip it back and the story is simple.
Lucumí wants Juventus. Juventus want Lucumí. Bologna want their money.
The clock, as always in August, wants everyone to hurry up.
Whether this stand-off breaks in time for Lucumí to walk out at the Allianz Stadium in black and white, or whether Juventus’ defensive rebuild takes yet another turn, will say plenty about how much real power the club still wields in this mercato.
