James Payne's Debut Shirt Sparks Bidding War

A debut shirt from a defender who once slipped under football’s radar is now at the centre of a bidding war, with offers already topping $3,200.

James Payne’s signed Olimpia jersey, worn on his first appearance for the Paraguayan giants, has ignited a frenzy in the club’s official online auction. Not bad for a player who, until recently, could walk through most stadiums unnoticed.

From bench to bidding war

Payne, the New Zealand full-back who joined Olimpia on a one-year deal in June after seven seasons with Wellington Phoenix, made his bow on August 2 against Rubio Nu. He started on the bench. He didn’t stay quiet for long.

Thrown on in a game Olimpia were already controlling, Payne scored within minutes of coming on in a 5-0 demolition. One burst, one finish, and a new favourite in Asuncion was born.

That debut shirt, now under the hammer, has become a symbol of a career that has suddenly gone global.

Promoting the auction in an official club video, Payne underlined what the jersey means to him and to the fanbase: “I know exactly what it means to wear these stripes and play in this shirt, and that's why I want to give it to a true Olimpista.”

The message landed. So did the bids.

The influencer who changed everything

The on-field impact was only half the story. The real explosion came online.

Argentine influencer Valen Scarsini, known as El Scarso, set out during the 2026 World Cup to find the “least-known” player at the tournament. He picked Payne. Then he pointed millions of followers in his direction.

The effect was staggering. Payne’s Instagram account, which had fewer than 5,000 followers, rocketed to more than 5.4 million in a matter of days. A defender with a modest club CV suddenly had a digital footprint to rival global stars.

That viral surge has now spilled over into the auction room. While the current offers are nowhere near the $7.8 million paid for Lionel Messi’s 2022 World Cup jerseys at Sotheby’s in December 2023, the sheer demand for Payne’s debut shirt is extraordinary for a player who, not long ago, was virtually unknown outside New Zealand and a few niche circles.

A career in the shadows, now under the spotlight

Payne’s path to this moment has been anything but straightforward.

He has spent most of his career on the fringes of the global game, far from the glamour of Europe’s elite leagues. A two-year spell at Blackburn Rovers promised a foothold in English football, but work-permit issues blocked him from making a single competitive appearance. His journey drifted instead through less heralded stages, away from the cameras and the big paydays.

Now, the cameras have finally found him. The challenge changes with them.

Beyond the hype

For Olimpia, the viral boom is a bonus. The real concern is what happens between the white lines.

The club and their new full-back now turn fully to the grind of domestic competition after that emphatic 5-0 start. Payne’s task is clear: show that he is more than an internet phenomenon. The shirt can be sold on a wave of clicks; his place in the XI will not be.

He must prove, week after week, that his game holds up in the unforgiving environment of South American football. The tempo is higher. The duels are harder. The scrutiny is sharper now that millions are watching.

Adapt, and he becomes more than a curiosity — he becomes a pillar for an Asuncion heavyweight chasing trophies through the 2026-27 season.

Fail, and that debut jersey might stand as a strange relic of a moment when the algorithm made him famous, before the football truly caught up.
