Jacy's Wild Ride: Defender's Viral Goal Celebration Mishap

For a few surreal seconds at Couto Pereira, it looked as if the goalscorer had fallen off the face of the earth.

Coritiba captain Jacy Maranhao, a centre-back more used to blocking shots than smashing them in, had just lived every defender’s dream against Chapecoense in the 2026 Brasileirao on Saturday. He wheeled away in delight, hurdled the perimeter barrier to salute the stands – and vanished.

One leap, one misjudged step, and the celebration turned into a viral calamity.

On the other side of the advertising boards lay the opening to the stairway leading down to the players’ tunnel. Normally, that entrance stays shut during play. This time, with half-time approaching, it had already been opened. Jacy cleared the boards and dropped straight into the void.

The footage raced around the world: the captain disappearing from view, then re-emerging seconds later, clambering out of the tunnel access, stumbling, grimacing, and still trying to roar in triumph as his teammates rushed over in disbelief.

The punchline came from VAR. The goal, the one that sent him flying into the tunnel, was ruled offside.

The dream finish evaporated. The fall did not.

Jacy played on until the second half, but the awkward landing had left its mark. He was substituted due to pain in his foot as Coritiba continued to chase the result without their captain on the pitch. They got it anyway, grinding out a 2-1 win over Chapecoense to keep their campaign moving.

After the match, the defender cut a more sheepish figure. He admitted he had been “carried away” by the rare chance to get on the scoresheet, pointing out the obvious truth of his position: defenders don’t score many goals.

There was a more personal reason behind the exuberance too. Speaking to local media, Jacy explained he had wanted to celebrate directly with his pregnant wife in the stands, misreading the layout in the heat of the moment and forgetting that the tunnel access sat precisely where he chose to land.

His description of the fall was as vivid as the images. When he jumped, he said, it felt like that jolt in a nightmare when you dream you’re falling from a building. Only this time, it was very real, and it ended on concrete, not in a startled awakening.

The initial shock gave way to concern over his foot. During the game, he struggled to put weight on it. By Monday, though, the tone had changed. Posting on social media, Jacy said the scare had been worse than the injury itself and that he was feeling “much better” and recovering well.

Couto Pereira, it turns out, has seen this movie before. In 2014, Cameroonian striker Joel Tagueu also disappeared into the same tunnel while celebrating a goal for Coritiba, another victim of the stadium’s treacherous geometry when joy meets adrenaline.

Two different eras, same stadium, same trap. And for defenders everywhere, another reminder: scoring is hard enough. Sticking the landing can be even trickier.
