Yet the build-up to this fixture carries a sombre note. Yael Trepy remains in hospital after a swimming pool accident. He has left intensive care but will miss the Inter clash. Agustin Albarracín is also sidelined, trimming Pisacane’s options, though there are no suspensions to navigate.

There is at least one new face on the training pitch. Alieu Fadera has finally joined the group after completing his move, giving Cagliari an extra attacking option, even if this game may come too soon for a major role.

They have scored first in each of the last nine Serie A meetings with Cagliari. They have led at half-time in six of the last eight. When Inter get on top of this opponent, they tend to do it early.

There is one wrinkle. The most recent clash, a 3-0 win for Inter at San Siro, was goalless at the break before Marcus Thuram, Barella and Zieliński blew it open in the second half.
