Roberto De Zerbi Faces Key Selection Decisions Ahead of Newcastle Clash

Roberto De Zerbi has a decision to make, but it is not about fitness.

The Egyptian forward, unused in the comeback win over Bournemouth last weekend, is fully fit. De Zerbi made that clear. The question now is whether he rips up a winning front line to accommodate him.

Richarlison and Dominic Solanke led the line as City were turned over 2-1, and both have strong claims to keep their places. De Zerbi must choose: start his 27-year-old attacker and reshuffle, or keep him as a weapon on the bench.

Savio primed for full debut

One new face is almost certain to step into the spotlight.

Savio, the Brazilian winger signed from City in a deal worth up to £85million earlier this week, could make his first start after a blistering introduction in north London. He scored and assisted on his debut in the Carabao Cup second-round win over Charlton, instantly justifying the hype and the price tag.

That cameo has fast-tracked him into De Zerbi’s plans for Newcastle. The manager name-checked him among those “available to play, maybe also the beginning of the game”.

Defensive puzzle for De Zerbi

At the back, the picture is more delicate.

Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro both made their first appearances of the season off the bench against Charlton, and De Zerbi confirmed they are in contention to start against Newcastle.

“Van de Ven is right to play. We have to look, we have to understand the beginning part of the game. Like Savio, like Pedro, Marmoush is available to play, maybe also the beginning of the game,” he said.

Yet Van de Ven remains a calculated risk. The Dutch defender has been managing an injury and has a history of muscle problems during his Spurs career. De Zerbi is leaning towards caution, wary of pushing him too hard, too soon.

There was better news at full-back. “Robertson is like Udogie. Udogie is a good news for us because Udogie is very important and he played well 60 minutes, like was the plan,” De Zerbi added, pleased that the left-back came through his scheduled hour without issues.

Mohammed Kudus, meanwhile, is pushing for a spot among the substitutes as he edges closer to involvement.

Maddison’s return carefully managed

James Maddison remains the other major consideration.

Asked if supporters would need patience as the 29-year-old works towards a consistent run of games, De Zerbi stressed that the club are following a clear plan. The priority is to bring Maddison back in the best possible condition, not rush him into the kind of stop-start pattern that has blunted too many seasons.

With Newcastle looming and options suddenly flooding back, De Zerbi has what every manager wants: choices. The real test now is how bold he is prepared to be with them.
